Presidential elections were held in Kosovo on 26 February 2016. They had originally been planned for 2013 following constitutional changes expected to be passed after the compromise reached after the indirect 2011 election. [1] However, on 6 July 2012, the Constitutional Court ruled that the presidential term could not be cut short in this way. [2]

Former prime minister Hashim Thaçi was elected after a third round of voting, defeating Rafet Rama.

Electoral system

In order to be elected, a candidate was required to receive at least 80 votes in the first two rounds of voting, equivalent to two-thirds of the 120 members of the Assembly. In the third round, the requirement was reduced to a simple majority of 60 votes. [3]

Parliamentary elections are held every four years, the most recent in 2021.

<i>Koha Ditore</i> Daily newspaper in Kosovo

Koha Ditore is the leading daily newspaper in Kosovo. It is published by Koha Group and was founded and owned by politician Veton Surroi. His sister Flaka Surroi is now the publisher, following Veton Surroi's launch of his political career within the ORA reformist party. The newspaper initially published as a weekly magazine Koha, that ran from 1992 to 1994, becoming a leading weekly magazine in Kosovo. The initial team included new generation of opinion-makers such as Ylber Hysa, Baton Haxhiu, Dukagjin Gorani, Eqrem Basha, Shkelzen Maliqi, etc. The newspaper with the same name was published for the first time in 1997. Its current editor in chief is Agron Bajrami.

The parliament of Kosovo held indirect elections for president of Kosovo on 3 and 4 April 2021. The elections successfully concluded after three rounds, with Vjosa Osmani winning 71 votes out of a total possible 120. Three political parties boycotted the vote. Nasuf Bejta, also a member of Guxo, the political party Osmani founded, was the only other candidate who received a vote during any of the other rounds.
