The 2016 Temple Owls football team represented Temple University in the 2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Owls were led by fourth-year head coach Matt Rhule and played their home games at Lincoln Financial Field. They were members of the East Division of the American Athletic Conference.
On December 6, Rhule resigned to become the head coach at Baylor. [2] Special teams coordinator and tight ends coach Ed Foley led the Owls in the Military Bowl. [3]

The Owls dominated a Navy Midshipmen football offense that was ranked in the top 20 in the country, coming off a 75-point offensive outburst the week before to win the first major conference title in Temple history. Temple sent one of its largest away crowds ever, with nearly half the fans in attendance supporting the Owls. Temple was ranked in all three major polls following the game and were invited to the Military Bowl vs Wake Forest Demon Deacons football on December 27, 2016.

Brandon Patrick Noble is a former American football defensive tackle in the National Football League for the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins. He played college football at Penn State University.
Phillip Snow is an American football coach who was the senior defensive analyst for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers from 2020 to 2022.
Bob Bicknell is an American football coach and former player who is the tight ends coach for the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as the senior offensive assistant for the New Orleans Saints from 2022 to 2023 and as the wide receivers coach for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2018 to 2020. Bicknell is the son of former Boston College head coach Jack Bicknell and the younger brother of Jack Bicknell, Jr., the current assistant offensive line coach for Wisconsin.
Matthew Kenneth Rhule is an American college football coach and former linebacker. He is the head football coach for the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, a position he has held since 2023. He was also the head football coach for Temple University from 2013 to 2016, Baylor University from 2017 to 2019, and the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL). Rhule played linebacker at Penn State from 1994 to 1997.

Nikita Nehemiah Whitlock is a former American American football & Canadian football fullback and defensive tackle. He was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2014. Whitlock has also been a member of the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants in the National Football League (NFL), the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League (CFL), and the Tampa Bay Vipers in the XFL. He played college football at Wake Forest.

Phillip "P. J." Walker Jr. is an American football quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Temple, and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Indianapolis Colts in 2017. He also played for the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL in 2020, leading the league in passing yards and touchdowns before it suspended operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
