On 2 August 2017, a 19-year old Palestinian teen critically injured an Israeli civilian with a knife at a local supermarket in the city of Yavne, located in the Central District of Israel. The attacker was subsequently arrested after being captured by civilians who were at the spot. Police confirmed the attack was an act of terrorism. [1]

The assailant was later identified as Ismail Abu Aram, resident of Yatta, Hebron, located in the West Bank.

Attack

Shortly before noon, a knife-wielding man entered a Shufersal supermarket in Yavneh, Israel. Then, he approached an employee at the market, Niv Nehemiah, waiting for him to turn around, and then stabbed him fifteen times [2] in his head and the neck as Nehemiah fought off the attacker; the incident was captured on the store's security cameras. [3] [4] [2] [5] Despite being gravely injured, Nehemiah fought off the assailant, tried to run away, and then blocked the assailant with a shopping cart, [1] events shown on security camera footage released by authorities later. [6] [2] [7] The assailant then fled the supermarket and was captured outside by civilians who held him subdued to the ground, [8] one of the civilians pulled out a gun, however, he was told by other civilians "Don't go overboard". [1] The capture of the assailant outside of the supermarket was also recorded on a cellphone video. [9] [1]

Prior to attacking the employee, the assailant reportedly asked a shopper if he worked at the supermarket; however he didn't attack. [10] Some 15 minutes before the attack, the assailant asked the victim on the whereabouts of the bathroom in the compound. [11] The original target was the attacker's former employer, using a knife he would steal and a can of pepper spray he brought with him, [12] however due to availability he decided to kill a different Israeli. [13]

Victim

Nehemiah (42), [14] the deputy manager at the supermarket, where the attack occurred, [15] was severely wounded and taken to Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot. [16] He was unconscious and in critical condition for 4 days, [17] and underwent a series of surgical operations, [2] [15] In addition he was hooked up to a respirator while being held in the intensive care unit. [18] On 12 August, Nehemiah was visited by Benjamin Netanyahu [19] On 21 August, Nehemiah, unable to speak due to damage to his vocal cords, gave a written statement to the media stating that he remembers the entire attack. [20] On 27 August, he was released from the hospital. [21]

President Reuven Rivlin phoned the victim's wife, hailing the victim as a hero and assuring her that the entire country is praying for her husband. [22] Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the victim for fighting valiantly against the assailant, [23] and subsequently visited the stabbing victim, who was critically injured from stabs to the neck and torso and was unconsciousness for a few days, [24] [25] on 8 August 2017, six days after the attack. [26]

Perpetrator

The assailant, Ismail Abu Aram, [27] 19-years old Palestinian teen from Yatta, Hebron, [28] without a prior security offence background. [28] According to the Shin Bet, Aby Aram did not have a permit to enter Israel, [29] and Netanyahu later visited the spot where he crossed the Green Line. [30] Following the attack Abu Aram attempted to flee the scene, [31] but ultimately was detained by Israeli authorities. [32] He was indicted on 28 August 2017, the indictment stated that the assailant traveled to Saudi Arabia in order to perform an Umrah, as part of a strengthening of his Islamic belief, and that he set out to attack a Jew in order to fulfill the Islamic commandment of Jihad. [33] During his 12-day visit for Ramadan to Mecca, he decided to "fulfill his duty to jihad", to "kill a Jew" [34] and to carry out "the commandment of jihad against the Jewish Israeli occupation." [35] [36]

Under Israeli criminal law, attempted murder can be charged as murder, which the victims family has requested. [37]

Aftermath

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) forces raided the home of the assailant in the city of Yatta, and arrested his father. Clashes developed between IDF forces and the residents of the city during the raid. [28] Yatta is known as the hometown of many assailants, including the perpetrators of the June 2016 Tel Aviv shooting. [38] The city of Yatta was then cordoned off by the IDF, blocking all entrances and exits to the city. [39]

The attack occurred four hours after the killing of Sergeant Almog Shiloni in Tel Aviv and took place at the same bus/hitch-hiking stop where three Israeli teenagers were kidnapped and murdered in June 2014.

Sergeant Almog Shiloni of the Israel Defense Forces was killed on 10 November 2014 after he was stabbed multiple times at Tel Aviv HaHagana Railway Station. He died in hospital from his wounds. Shiloni was off-duty, but in uniform and armed at the time.

During the morning rush hour of 21 January 2015, a Palestinian man from Tulkarm, West Bank boarded a bus in Tel Aviv and stabbed multiple persons in a terrorist attack. After the bus he boarded had driven about 400 metres, the Palestinian attacked the driver, who fought back, before turning to other passengers and attacking them. The bus stopped, with the passengers fleeing, and the Palestinian attacked others too. Israeli police shot the terrorist in the foot and arrested him.

On 3 October 2015, a Palestinian resident of al-Bireh attacked the Benita family near the Lions' Gate in Jerusalem, as they were on their way to the Western Wall to pray. The attacker murdered Aaron Benita, the father of the family, and injured the mother Adele and their 2-year-old son Matan. Nehemia Lavi, a resident who heard screams and came to help was also murdered and his gun taken by the assailant. The attacker, 19 year old Muhanad Shafeq Halabi was shot and killed by police as he was firing on pedestrians.

On November 19, 2015, an assailant approached the entrance of a Tel Aviv synagogue at prayer time, and stabbed and killed two worshipers. The attacker was arrested.

On 8 March 2016, a 21-year-old Palestinian man from Qalqilya killed an American tourist and wounded ten civilians in a stabbing spree in Jaffa Port, Tel Aviv, Israel. The attacker was shot dead by the police after a chase along the beach promenade.

The killing of Abdel Fattah al-Sharif occurred on March 24, 2016, in the Tel Rumeida neighborhood of Hebron, when Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, a Palestinian who had stabbed an Israeli soldier, was shot, wounded and "neutralized", then was fatally shot again in the head by Elor Azaria, an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldier, as he lay wounded on the ground. Azaria was arrested and the Israeli Military Police opened an investigation against him for the charge of murder, but later reduced the charge to manslaughter.

The June 2016 Tel Aviv shooting, which occurred on 8 June 2016 in Tel Aviv, Israel, was a terrorist attack in which two Palestinian gunmen opened fire on patrons at the Max Brenner Cafe in the Sarona Market, killing four people and injuring seven others. The perpetrators were caught alive by the security forces and put in custody. According to an official indictment filed by the Tel Aviv District Prosecutor's Office the perpetrators were inspired by the Islamic State group.

On 30 June 2016, a 17-year-old Palestinian male broke into a home in the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba and stabbed to death Hallel Yaffa Ariel a thirteen year old Israeli-American citizen in her bedroom. The attacker was then fatally shot by security guards. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed "incitement-driven terrorists" while the U.S. State Department condemned the "outrageous terrorist attack".

The 2017 Jerusalem Light Rail stabbing was a stabbing attack and suspected act of terrorism that occurred on Good Friday, 14 April 2017, on Jerusalem Light Rail's car. In the attack, a 20 year old British student was stabbed to death by Jamil Tamimi, a Palestinian man. Two others, including a pregnant woman, were injured in the incident. The attacker was arrested and was deemed competent to stand trial.

The Halamish attack, or the Halamish massacre was a terrorist attack on a Jewish family in the West Bank Israeli settlement of Halamish, that took place on 21 July 2017, in which three Israelis were stabbed to death and one severely wounded. The victims of the attack were Yosef Salomon, his daughter Chaya and son Elad, the three who were murdered in the attack, and Tova Salomon, Yosef's wife, who was injured but survived.

The 2017 Temple Mount crisis was a period of violent tensions related to the Temple Mount, which began on 14 July 2017, after a shooting incident in the complex in which Palestinian gunmen killed two Israeli police officers. On 5 February 2018, 29-year-old Rabbi Itamar Ben Gal from Har Brakha, was stabbed to death at the Ariel Junction, near the West Bank Israeli settlement and city of Ariel. The assailant had escaped from the scene, but was arrested following a six-week manhunt. A protester was killed during a violent demonstration against searching for the suspect.

Ari Fuld was an American-Israeli who was murdered in a terrorist attack by a Palestinian terrorist at the Gush Etzion Junction.

On 7 August 2019, 18-year-old yeshiva student Dvir Sorek was stabbed to death near the Israeli settlement of Migdal Oz.
