On 30 June 2016, a 17-year-old Palestinian male broke into a home in the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba and stabbed to death Hallel Yaffa Ariel a thirteen year old Israeli-American citizen in her bedroom. The attacker was then fatally shot by security guards. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed "incitement-driven terrorists" while the U.S. State Department condemned the "outrageous terrorist attack". [1] [2] [3]

Yaffa Ariel was the youngest Israeli victim in the stabbing attacks during the 2015–2016 wave of violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. [4]

Attack

Mohammad Nasser Tra'ayra, a Palestinian high school dropout age 17 of Bani Naim infiltrated the Harsanina neighbourhood of the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba, entered a private home, and stabbed a Jewish girl, Hallel Yaffa Ariel (13) as she slept in her bed. Critically wounded, she was transported to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem where she died of her stabbing wounds. [5] [6]

According to some reports, Tra'ayra stabbed two other settlement guards before he was shot dead. A hospital spokesman said one of the security personnel, 31 years old, had suffered from serious gunshot wounds, a detail, according to Ma'an News Agency, missing in the army communiqué. [7] [8] [9]

Victims

Shuki Gilboa, a member of the volunteer neighborhood security association, responded after receiving an alert on his cell phone that the security perimeter had been breached. He was attacked by the perpetrator when he entered the 13-year-old victim's bedroom. The girl's father, Rabbi Amichai Ariel, then fired two shots at the perpetrator. One of the shots hit the attacker, the other hit Gilboa, who has permanently lost sight in one eye. [10] [11] [12]

Perpetrator

The attacker was Mohammad Tra'ayra from the town of Bani Na'im. [13] Tra'ayra had boasted on Facebook his wishes to die as a martyr, and avenge his cousin, Yousef Walid Tra'ayra, who rammed his car into an Israeli military vehicle on 14 March 2016, injuring three Israeli soldiers. [13]

The attacker's mother praised her son as a martyr defending Jerusalem and the al-Aqsa Mosque and hoped others would follow in his path. [13] [14] A banner with pictures of Tra'ayra and the late Yasser Arafat was hung outside a building in the West Bank village of Tra'ayra's family, and the family is eligible for $350 a month from a Palestinian fund for martyrs. [15]

Aftermath

Consequences for Palestinian communities and perpetrator's family

According to the Los Angeles Times , in direct response to this murder, Israel launched "a clampdown on hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in nearby Hebron and its surrounding villages, the likes of which hasn’t been seen in years." [16]

According to the New York Times , in response to this and other attacks, Israel announced that it would "deduct from the tax revenues it collects on behalf of the Palestinian Authority an unspecified amount equivalent to what the authority pays in stipends to the families of people who carry out terrorist acts." [17]

The Israeli army locked down Tra'ayra's hometown, [18] and "sealed off" roads leading to Hebron for a time in response to this and other attacks that occurred within a brief time span. [19] His father was arrested and two of his siblings, Tamer and Lara Tra’ayra, were detained while proceedings were underway for charging them with incitement on the grounds that they had posted messages favoring "martyrs" on social media. [20] Arrangements were made to demolish his family's home.

Political impact

Following the attack the Israeli government appropriated $12.9m to "strengthen" the settlement of Kiryat Arba and the Israeli settlers in nearby Hebron. The funds will be used for social projects, education and for increased security. The money will be paid from the budgets of several Ministries. [21] [22] The plan features the construction of 42 new homes in Kiryat Arba. [4] [23]

The Palestinian Authority was put "on the defensive" over its policy of paying a monthly stipend of $350 to the family of Hallel Ariel's killer, as it does for the families of all Palestinian "martyrs", drawing on the Palestinian Authority Martyrs Fund, which is dedicated to that purpose. [24] [6] Prime Minister Netanyahu calls the payments "an incentive for murder". [24] The Israeli government, describing the payments as glorifying terrorism, responded to this attack with an announcement that it will deduct the value of "Martyr" payments from the tax revenue it pays to the Palestinian Authority. [24] The Fund, established in 1967 by the Palestinian Liberation Organization makes payments to 35,000 families, including the families of suicide bombers, from an annual budget of $170 million in 2016. [24]

Beit Hagai, also Hagai, is an Israeli settlement organized as a community settlement located in the southern Hebron Hills in the West Bank. The settlement population was 460 in 2004, according to a classified government document published by the Haaretz newspaper, and lies within the municipal jurisdiction of the Har Hevron Regional Council. The religious Jewish community's name, Haggai, is an acronym of the given names Hanan Krauthammer, Gershon Klein, and Yaakov Zimmerman, three Nir Yeshiva students murdered in the 1980 Hebron terrorist attack. The ongoing conflict between Palestinians and Jewish settlers in the West Bank city of Hebron is part of the wider Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Hebron has a Palestinian majority, consisting of an estimated 208,750 citizens (2015) and a small Jewish minority, variously numbered between 500 and 800. The H1 sector of Hebron, home to around 170,000 Palestinians, is governed by the Palestinian Authority. H2, which was inhabited by around 30,000 Palestinians, is under Israeli military control with an entire brigade in place to protect some 800 Jewish residents living in the old Jewish quarter. As of 2015, Israel has declared that a number of special areas of Old City of Hebron constitute a closed military zone. Palestinians shops have been forced to close; despite protests Palestinian women are reportedly frisked by men, and residents, who are subjected every day to repeated body searches, must register to obtain special permits to navigate through the 18 military checkpoints Israel has set up in the city center.

The August 2010 West Bank shooting attack was an attack near the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, carried out by Hamas militants. Four Israeli settlers from the settlements of Beit Hagai and Efrat were killed after militants attacked their vehicle. It was the deadliest Palestinian attack on Israelis in over two years.

The 2002 Hebron ambush took place in the Wadi an-Nasara neighborhood in Hebron in the West Bank on 15 November 2002. Israeli forces were subjected to a double attack by fighters from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The battle was referred to in Israel as "The attack on the worshippers' route", Hebrew: הפיגוע בציר המתפללים. The place where the attack took place became known as the "Alley of Death" both in Hebrew and Arabic. The ambush was initially dubbed as the "Sabbath massacre" by official Israeli spokespersons.

The murder of Asher and Yonatan Palmer occurred on 23 September 2011, when a Palestinian stone throwing attack caused Asher, aged 24, to lose control of a vehicle he was driving near the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba in the West Bank, killing him and his infant son. Initially thought to be an accident, it was later deemed a terrorist attack by the Israel Police.

The 2014 Alon Shvut stabbing attack occurred on 10 November 2014, when Palestinian Maher al-Hashlamun first attempted to run his vehicle into a crowd waiting at the bus/hitch-hiking station at the entrance to the Israeli settlement of Alon Shvut, in the Gush Etzion section of the occupied West Bank, then, when the car was stopped by a bollard, got out and attacked with a knife, killing a young woman and wounding two others. The attack occurred four hours after the killing of Sergeant Almog Shiloni in Tel Aviv and took place at the same bus/hitch-hiking stop where three Israeli teenagers were kidnapped and murdered in June 2014.

Sergeant Almog Shiloni of the Israel Defense Forces was killed on 10 November 2014 after he was stabbed multiple times at Tel Aviv HaHagana Railway Station. He died in hospital from his wounds. Shiloni was off-duty, but in uniform and armed at the time.

An increase of violence occurred in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict starting in the autumn of 2015 and lasting into the first half of 2016. It was called the "Intifada of the Individuals" by Israeli sources, the Knife Intifada, Stabbing Intifada or Jerusalem Intifada by international sources because of the many stabbings in Jerusalem, or Habba by Palestinian sources. 38 Israelis and 235 Palestinians were killed in the violence. 558 Israelis and thousands of Palestinians were injured.

On 8 March 2016, a 21-year-old Palestinian man from Qalqilya killed an American tourist and wounded ten civilians in a stabbing spree in Jaffa Port, Tel Aviv, Israel. The attacker was shot dead by the police after a chase along the beach promenade.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">1980 Hebron attack</span> Massacre of Jews in 1980

On 2 May 1980, six Jews – three Israelis, two American Israelis, and one Canadian – were killed, and another 20 Jews were injured at 7:30 pm on a Friday night as they returned home from Sabbath prayer services at the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron. Five of the six killed were yeshiva students aged 20–21. They were attacked with gunfire and grenades from the rooftops around a small alley.

The Halamish attack, or the Halamish massacre was a terrorist attack on a Jewish family in the West Bank Israeli settlement of Halamish, that took place on 21 July 2017, in which three Israelis were stabbed to death and one severely wounded. The victims of the attack were Yosef Salomon, his daughter Chaya and son Elad, the three who were murdered in the attack, and Tova Salomon, Yosef's wife, who was injured but survived.

On 2 August 2017, a 19-year old Palestinian teen critically injured an Israeli civilian with a knife at a local supermarket in the city of Yavne, located in the Central District of Israel. The attacker was subsequently arrested after being captured by civilians who were at the spot. Police confirmed the attack was an act of terrorism.

On 5 February 2018, 29-year-old Rabbi Itamar Ben Gal from Har Brakha, was stabbed to death at the Ariel Junction, near the West Bank Israeli settlement and city of Ariel. The assailant had escaped from the scene, but was arrested following a six-week manhunt. A protester was killed during a violent demonstration against searching for the suspect.

On 29 October 2022, a Palestinian gunman affiliated with al-Qassam Brigades, the militant arm of Hamas, shot four people, killing one, in the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba.
