The World Weightlifting Championships 2009 was held in Goyang, South Korea. The event took place from November 20 to November 29, 2009.

The 1978 Asian Games, was a multi-sport event held in Bangkok, Thailand from 9 December to 20 December 1978. Originally, the host city was to be Singapore, but it dropped its plan to host the Games due to financial problems. Then the capital of Pakistan, Islamabad, was subsequently chosen to host the games. However Pakistan also dropped its plan to host the games due to conflicts with Bangladesh and India.

This was the first World Championship after the IWF changed their weight classes and nullified all world records. As a result, this World Championship saw a total of 31 senior men's world records and 41 senior women's world records set.

The 2019 European Weightlifting Championships was held in Batumi, Georgia from 6 to 13 April 2019.
The 2020 Pan American Weightlifting Championships were held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from 19 to 24 April 2021.
The 2022 World Weightlifting Championships was a weightlifting competition held in Bogotá, Colombia in December 2022. It was scheduled to be held in Chongqing, China but this changed in March 2022 as a result of COVID-19 measures in China. The new location was announced in April 2022. It was the first time Colombia hosted the World Weightlifting Championships.
The 2022 Junior World Weightlifting Championships were held in Heraklion, Greece, from 2 to 10 May 2022.
The 2022 Asian Youth & Junior Weightlifting Championships were held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from 15 to 25 July 2022.
The 2023 Asian Youth & Junior Weightlifting Championships were held at Delhi, India from 28 July to 5 August.
