The Cardinals were led by second-year head coach Mike Schultz and played their home games at Provost Umphrey Stadium. They played as a member of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 7–5, 6–3 in Southland play to finish in third place. They received an at-large berth to the FCS Playoffs, where they lost in the first round to Northern Iowa.

In fourth year of an agreement (third year for football) with ESPN, live video of all home games (except those picked up by Southland Conference TV agreements) will be streamed on ESPN3. [1]

The 2022 McNeese Cowboys football team represented McNeese State University as a member of the Southland Conference during the 2022 NCAA Division I FCS football season. They were led by head coach Gary Goff, who was coaching his first season with the program. The Cowboys played their home games at Cowboy Stadium in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

The 2022–23 Lamar Cardinals basketball team represented Lamar University during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Cardinals were led by second-year head coach Alvin Brooks and played their home games at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas. The Cardinals' returned as members of the Southland Conference following one season in the Western Athletic Conference. The Cardinals finished the 2022–23 season 9–22 overall and 5–13 in Southland Conference play to finish last in conference. The Cardinals failed to qualify for the SLC tournament.

The 2022–23 Lamar Lady Cardinals basketball team represents Lamar University during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Lady Cardinals, led by fourth year head coach Aqua Franklin, play their home games at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas as members of the Southland Conference.
