The 2016 Lamar Cardinals football team represented Lamar University in the 2016 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Cardinals were led by seventh-year head coach Ray Woodard and played their home games at Provost Umphrey Stadium. They were a member of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 3–8, 3–6 in Southland play to finish in a tie for eighth place.

All Lamar games will be broadcast on KLVI, also known as News Talk 560.

Live video of all home games (except those broadcast via the American Sports Network) will be streamed on ESPN3. [1] [2]

Previous season

In 2015, the Cardinals finished the season 5–6 overall. In Southland play, the Cardinals had a 4–5 record finishing in a three-way tie for fifth place.

Team records

Several Southland Conference and team marks were broken. Kade Harrington broke the Southland Conference and team records for rushing yards in a game and in a season. He also set school records in all-purpose yards in a game and in a season and in consecutive games with over 100 yards gained. [3]

Honors and recognition

Kade Harrington

  • All-American - Kade Harrington was named to the AP All-America Team, 1st team; FCS Stats All-American, 1st team; College Sports Madness All-American, 1st team; and American Football Coaches Association All-American, 1st team. [4] [5] [6]
  • Player of the Year - Harrington was an FCS Player of the Year Finalist, finishing second in voting missing out on first place by 29 votes. [7] He was also named Southland Conference Player of the Year and American Sports Network Player of the Year. [8] [9]

Harrington led the nation in the following categories:

  • Rushing - 2092 yards
  • Rushing yards per game - 190.2
  • Rushing touchdowns - 21
  • All-purpose yards per game - 213.9

SLC All-Conference

Ten Cardinals received Southland Conference All-Conference recognition at the conclusion of the 2015 season. Four Cardinals were named to the SLC All-Conference 1st team on offense. Those players were Kade Harrington, running back; Reggie Begelton, wide receiver; and Cody Elenz and Bret Treadway, offensive line. Larance Hale was named to the SLC All-Conference 1st team on defense as defensive lineman. Rodney Randle was named to the SLC All-Conference 2nd team on defense as kick returner. Four Cardinals received honorable mention honors. Those included DeAndre Jennings and Justin Brock on offense. Logan Moss and Xavier Bethany received honorable mention recognition on defense. [10]

Post Season Play

Brent Nicholson, deep snapper for the Cardinals, was invited to play in the National Bowl, an All-Star game for non-FBS seniors. [11]

Before the season

Changes in the coaching staff

Spring camp and 6th annual Crawfish Bowl

The Cardinals participated in Spring camp from March 7 ending with the 6th annual Crawfish Bowl Spring game on April 16. Camp included workouts three days each week with a break from March 14–18 for Spring Break. [18] The offense defeated the defense 25-23 in the Crawfish Bowl Spring game. [19]

Roster changes

2015 1st team All-Southland Conference member, Larance Hale, was dismissed from the team on March 29, 2016 for a violation of team rules. [20]

Honors and recognition

Pre-season FCS All-America team

  • Athlon Sports 2016 FCS All-America team - Kade Harrington was named to the pre-season Athlon Sports 2016 FCS All-America team. [21]
  • STATS 2016 FCS All-America team - Kade Harrington was named to the 1st team pre-season STATS 2016 FCS All-America team. Bret Treadway was named to the STATS FCS pre-season 3rd team. [22]
  • College Sports Madness 2016 FCS All-America team - Kade Harrington was named to the 1st team pre-season College Sports Madness 2016 FCS All-America team. Bret Treadway was named to the College Sports Madness FCS pre-season 3rd team. [23]

Pre-season Southland Conference team

Four Cardinals were named to pre-season Southland Conference teams. Kade Harrington, Bret Treadway, and Rodney Randle were named as 1st teamers. Brendan Langley was named to the 2nd team. [24]

2016 recruiting

The Cardinals signed 28 players including 22 high school recruits and six transfers from other colleges. Three of the transfers were from NCAA Division I (FBS) programs. Four of the recruits were already enrolled for the spring, 2016 semester while 24 signed letters of intent on National Signing Day.

Four recruits transferring from other programs enrolled for Spring, 2016 semester courses at Lamar. The four players are Jalen Barnes from Texas Tech, Kanon Mackey from Texas State, Marcus Daggs from Cisco College, and Clayton Turner from Miami (FL).     Post Signing Day Transfers

    Andrew Allen transferred from New Mexico State. He has two years of eligibility remaining. Allen started 8 games and played in 17 games for the Aggies. He had 1,700 yards passing and 16 touchdowns, and rushed for 352 yards for New Mexico State. [26] [27] Ratings are from the high school recruiting period.

      Schedule

      Lamar University announced its 2016 football schedule on February 17, 2016. According to the announcement, the 2016 schedule will consist of eleven games with a conference schedule of nine games. Out of conference games are the season home opener against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers which will be in its first year of transition to NCAA Division I (FBS), followed by an away game against NCAA Division I (FBS) American Athletic Conference member, Houston Cougars. Six of the games, including five Southland Conference games, will be played at home at Provost Umphrey Stadium. [29]

      The Southland Conference, abbreviated as SLC, is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the South Central United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I for all sports; for football, it participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Southland sponsors 18 sports, 10 for women and eight for men, and is governed by a presidential Board of Directors and an Advisory Council of athletic and academic administrators. Chris Grant became the Southland's seventh commissioner on April 5, 2022. From 1996 to 2002, for football only, the Southland Conference was known as the Southland Football League.

The Cardinals rejoined the Southland after spending the 2021–22 athletic year in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

      The Incarnate Word Cardinals football program is the intercollegiate American football team for the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) located in San Antonio, Texas. The program began in 2009 and originally competed in NCAA Division II as members of the Lone Star Conference. In 2013, the school moved to Division I. For the 2013 season, UIW competed as a member of the Southland Conference for all sports except football. Football competed with an 11-game schedule as an Independent. UIW began playing Southland football in the 2014 season. The team plays its home games at the 6,000 seat Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.

      The Lamar Cardinals basketball team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I men's basketball competition. The Cardinals currently play in the Southland Conference following a return from the Western Athletic Conference on July 11, 2022. They were one of four programs, all from Texas, that left the Southland Conference on July 1, 2021, to join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Lamar left the Southland Conference for the second time, having initially joined at the league's formation in 1963, left in 1987, and returned in 1999. After one season in the WAC, Lamar returned to the Southland Conference. The Cardinals have played home games in the Montagne Center since 1984. The Lamar University basketball team is one of the school's most storied athletic programs. The Cardinals have competed in NCAA Tournament play eleven times and six times at the NCAA Division I level with the most recent appearance in the 2012 tournament. The 1979–80 team was one of the 1980 tournament's Sweet Sixteen teams. The Cardinals have also competed in four NIT tournaments. Heading into the 2014–2015 season Lamar had a 284–143 record in the Montagne Center. The Cardinals overall record going into the 2014–2015 season was 922–818.

The Cardinals are members of the Southland Conference and play their home games in the 16,000 seat Provost Umphrey Stadium. After one season in the WAC, Lamar and the Southland Conference announced on July 11, 2022 Lamar's accelerated return to the Southland Conference effective immediately.

      The 2016 Lamar Cardinals baseball team represented Lamar University in the 2016 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Cardinals played their home games at Vincent–Beck Stadium and are members of the Southland Conference. The team was coached by Jim Gilligan in his 39th and final season at Lamar.

      The 2015–16 Lamar Lady Cardinals basketball team represented Lamar University during the 2015–16 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Lady Cardinals, led by third year head coach Robin Harmony, played their home games at the Montagne Center and are members of the Southland Conference. They finished the season with a 12-19 overall record and a 7-11 conference record. Qualifying for the conference tournament, the Lady Cardinals won the first game against Houston Baptist and were eliminated by McNeese State.

The Cardinals were led by second-year head coach Mike Schultz and played their home games at Provost Umphrey Stadium. They played as a member of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 7–5, 6–3 in Southland play to finish in third place. They received an at-large berth to the FCS Playoffs, where they lost in the first round to Northern Iowa.

The schedule included three non-conference and nine conference games.

      The 2020 Lamar Cardinals football team represented Lamar University in the 2020–21 NCAA Division I FCS football season as a member of the Southland Conference. The Cardinals were led by first-year head coach Blane Morgan and played their home games at Provost Umphrey Stadium. Originally scheduled to play an eleven-game regular season schedule in 2020, the Cardinals played shortened 6 game schedule in Spring 2021 with all games against conference members due to the COVID19 Pandemic. The Cardinals finished the season with a 2–4 overall record. The conference record was also 2–4 tied for fifth place with McNeese.

      The 2021 Lamar Cardinals football team represented Lamar University in the 2021 NCAA Division I FCS football season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. The Cardinals were led by second-year head coach Blane Morgan and played their home games at Provost Umphrey Stadium. The game against North American University is not included in the Western Athletic Conference or AQ7 standings because it was classed as an exhibition game and was not countable due to NCAA policies.

      The 2022 Incarnate Word Cardinals football team represented the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) as a member of the Southland Conference during the 2022 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Cardinals played their home games at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. They were led by first-year head coach G. J. Kinne.

      The 2022 Lamar Cardinals football team represented Lamar University in the 2022 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Cardinals played their home games at Provost Umphrey Stadium in Beaumont, Texas, and competed in the Southland Conference following an early return from the Western Athletic Conference. On July 11, 2022, Lamar announced that they would take an early transition back to the Southland Conference after the athletic department announced back in April 2022 a transition back to the conference for the 2023 season.
