The 2019 African Beach Games were the inaugural edition of the international beach sports competition between the nations of Africa, organised by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA). The first Games were held on the island of Sal, Cape Verde in June 2019.

Contents

In the ten-day competition, a total of 45 nations competed in 28 events across 11 sports. Teqball was also included as a demonstration sport on 18 June.

The Games were awarded to the Cabo Verdean Olympic Committee (COC) at the ANOCA General Assembly in Djibouti in May 2017. [1] The host contract was signed in March 2018 between the City Hall of Sal, the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and the Cabo Verdean Olympic Committee (COC), to carry out of the first African Beach Games 2019. [2]

Branding

The logo is the silhouette of the African continent, while the mascot is a tortoise named Krexteu. [3]

Participating nations

45 out of 54 nations participated. Chad, Comoros, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, São Tomé and Príncipe, Somalia and South Africa did not participate. [5]

The championship was governed by the Cape Verdean Football Federation.

The 3rd African Youth Games took place in Algiers, Algeria from 18 to 28 July 2018. The Games featured approximately 3,300 athletes from 55 African countries who competed in 30 sports. Algiers was awarded the games by Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa in 2014.

The African Beach Games is a continental multi-sport event held among athletes from the Africa. The Games are organised under the governance of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA). The Games were announced by the ANOCA President, Lassana Palenfo, in May 2015.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Teqball</span> Sport played with a football over a curved table

Teqball is a ball sport that is played on a curved table, combining elements of sepak takraw and table tennis. Back and forth, the players hit a football with any part of the body except arms and hands. Teqball can be played between two players as a singles game, or between four players as a doubles game. The game is represented at an international level by the International Federation of Teqball (FITEQ). A number of world-class footballers have been attracted by the game, and after being added to the programmes for the 2021 Asian Beach Games and the 2023 European Games, the sport is now aiming for Olympic inclusion.

The African Karate Federation is the continental governing body of the sport karate in Africa. The UFAK is a non-governmental continental organisation. It has legal personality and financial autonomy. It is non-political, non-profit, non-denominational and cannot accept any racial or other discrimination and performs its activities on an amateur basis in compliance with the principles set forth in the Olympic Charter, duly recognised by the World Karate Federation (WKF), Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC), Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA).

The Cabo Verde Basketball League (CVBL) is a professional men's basketball league Cape Verde. The league was founded in 2021 as the Praia Basketball League by former professional player António de Pina, as a way to boost tourism on the island and to boost the economy. In its first season, the league only featured teams from the country's capital Praia. The CVBL is recognised by the Cape Verdean Basketball Federation (Federação Cabo-Verdiana de Basquetebol), but is organised by Overseas Basketball Connection.
