The 2019 Eastern Cape provincial election was held on 8 May 2019, concurrently with the 2019 South African general election, to elect the 63 members of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature. The election was won by the African National Congress, the incumbent governing party in the province.
The African National Congress did not announce its premier candidate prior to the election. The incumbent premier Phumulo Masualle was 39th on the ANC's national list for the National Assembly election. [1] Oscar Mabuyane, the party's incumbent provincial chairperson, was first on the provincial list for the provincial election. [2] After the election, he announced as the party's premier candidate by the party's National Executive Committee. [3]
In September 2018, the official opposition, the Democratic Alliance, announced its provincial leader, Nqaba Bhanga as the party's premier candidate for the provincial election. [4] [5]
The Economic Freedom Fighters did not announce a premier candidate since the party wants to abolish provinces, [6] however, its provincial chairperson Yazini Tetyana was first on the party's list for the election. [7]
The United Democratic Movement placed its national chairperson Mncedisi Filtane first on its candidate list. [8]
Former DA provincial chairwoman Veliswa Mvenya was chosen as the African Transformation Movement's premier candidate. [9]
On 5 March 2019, the Freedom Front Plus announced their provincial leader Piet Mey as their premier candidate. [10]
Congress of the People Member of the Provincial Legislature, Rev. Lievie Sharpley was chosen as COPE's premier candidate. [11]
On 22 May 2019, members of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature were sworn in during the first sitting of the provincial legislature after the election and Oscar Masbuyane was elected as the provincial premier, while Helen Sauls-August was elected speaker with Mlibo Qoboshiyane as deputy speaker. The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature is the primary legislative body of the South African province of Eastern Cape. It is unicameral in its composition, and elects the premier and the provincial cabinet from among the members of the leading party or coalition in the parliament.

Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane is a South African politician who has been serving as the 7th Premier of the Eastern Cape since May 2019. He became a Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature in February 2018. A member of the African National Congress, he has been serving as the Provincial Chairperson of the party since his election in October 2017. From May 2018 to May 2019, he served as the Eastern Cape MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism.
The 2021 South African municipal elections were held on 1 November 2021, to elect councils for all district, metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country's nine provinces. It is the sixth municipal election held in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994, held every five years. The previous municipal elections were held in 2016. On 21 April 2021, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the elections will be held on Wednesday, 27 October 2021. It had been recommend by Dikgang Moseneke to delay the municipal elections until 2022. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) requested the Constitutional Court to support the date postponement. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supported the date postponement while the Democratic Alliance (DA) was against the postponement of the date. The Constitutional Court dismissed the application to postpone the date until 2022, ruling that they had to take place between 27 October and 1 November. On 9 September 2021, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced that the elections would be held on 1 November.
The 2019 Gauteng provincial election was held on 8 May 2019, concurrently with the 2019 South African general election, to elect the 73 members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.
Babalo Madikizela is a South African urban planner and politician serving as the Eastern Cape MEC for Public Works since May 2019. He has been a Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature since November 2018. Madikizela has been the provincial treasurer of the African National Congress (ANC) since October 2017.
Gerald Mlungisi Mvoko is a South African businessman and politician serving as the Eastern Cape MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Environmental Affairs since May 2019. He has been a Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature since February 2018. Mvoko is the deputy provincial chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC). He held two posts in the province's Executive Council before being appointed to his current position.
Fundile David Gade is a South African educator and politician serving as the Eastern Cape MEC for Education since May 2019. He has been a Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature for the African National Congress since May 2014. Gade had previously served as the chairperson of the legislature's Portfolio Committee on Education and as the chief whip of the ANC caucus.
Nomakhosazana Meth is a South African politician who has been the Eastern Cape MEC for Health since March 2021 and a Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature since May 2019. She was the MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform from May 2019 to March 2021. Meth is a member of the African National Congress. She was previously both the speaker and mayor of the OR Tambo District Municipality and the speaker of the Mbizana Local Municipality.
Andrew Grant Whitfield is a South African politician currently serving as the Shadow Minister of Police and as a Member of the National Assembly for the Democratic Alliance. He is the chairperson of the DA in the Eastern Cape and the leader of the party's Tsitsi-Kouga Constituency. Whitfield had previously served on the Nelson Mandela Bay city council and in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature.
Eastern Cape is one of the nine multi-member constituencies of the National Assembly of South Africa, the lower house of the Parliament of South Africa, the national legislature of South Africa. The constituency was established in 1994 when the National Assembly was established by the Interim Constitution following the end of Apartheid. It is conterminous with the province of Eastern Cape. The constituency currently elects 25 of the 400 members of the National Assembly using the closed party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2019 general election it had 3,363,161 registered electors.

The 2019 Northern Cape provincial election was held on 8 May 2019 to allocate the 30 seats of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature. Like all the South African provincial elections, it was held on the same day as the South African general election. 21 political parties participated in the election, of which only the African National Congress, Democratic Alliance, Economic Freedom Fighters, and Freedom Front Plus won seats. The ANC lost two seats, but maintained a majority.
Sakhumzi Stoffels Somyo is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress, he was elected to the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature in 2014. He was then appointed as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) responsible for the Finance, Economic Development, Environment and Tourism portfolio. In 2018, he was fired as an MEC. Somyo was elected to Parliament in 2019. Soon after, he was elected Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Auditor General.
