It was the all-Croatian duo's second consecutive ATP Tour Masters 1000 title together and their fifth title overall of the year. The win also earned Mektić his first successful career title defense. The match was the second successive encounter between both teams in consecutive Masters 1000 finals.

Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos defeated Nikola Mektić and Mate Pavić in the final, 1–6, 6–3, [10–8], to win the men's doubles tennis title at the 2021 Madrid Open. It was the third-seeded duo's third ATP Tour Masters 1000 doubles title together. Mektić and Pavić were contending to be the first doubles team in five years to win a season's first three Masters 1000 events.

Defending champions Nikola Mektić and Mate Pavić defeated John Isner and Diego Schwartzman in the final, 6–2, 6–7(6–8), [12–10] to win the men's doubles tennis title at the 2022 Italian Open. The pair saved a championship point en route to their tenth career title as a team.
