Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya were the defending champions, but both players chose to participate with different partners.
Nao Hibino was the defending champion, but chose to participate in Nürnberg instead.
Varatchaya Wongteanchai and Yang Zhaoxuan were the defending champions, but chose not to participate together. Wongteanchai played alongside Nao Hibino, but lost in the quarterfinals to Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua. Yang teamed up with Shuko Aoyama, but lost in the quarterfinals to Elise Mertens and İpek Soylu.
Liang Chen and Lu Jingjing were the defending champions, but chose not to compete together. Lu played alongside You Xiaodi, but lost in the quarterfinals to Liang and Ye Qiuyu. Liang and Ye then lost in the semifinals to Jiang Xinyu and Tang Qianhui.
Chan Yung-jan and Martina Hingis defeated Lucie Hradecká and Kateřina Siniaková in the final, 6–3, 6–2 to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2017 US Open. It was their first Grand Slam title together, and their seventh title overall, all in 2017.

Aoyama played alongside Yang Zhaoxuan, and successfully defended her title, defeating Monique Adamczak and Storm Sanders in the final 6–0, 2–6, [10–5]. Ninomiya teamed up with Renata Voráčová, but lost to Aoyama and Yang in the semifinals.
Chan Hao-ching and Latisha Chan were the defending champions, but Latisha Chan chose not to participate this year. Chan Hao-ching played alongside Tímea Babos, but lost in the semifinals to Nao Hibino and Oksana Kalashnikova.
Ashleigh Barty and Arina Rodionova were the defending champions, having won the previous edition in 2016, however both players chose to participate at the 2018 Miami Open instead.

Naomi Broady and Sara Sorribes Tormo were the defending champions, but Broady chose not to participate and Sorribes Tormo chose to compete in Charleston instead.

The Phillip Island Trophy was a new addition to the WTA Tour in 2021.
Alexa Guarachi and Desirae Krawczyk were the defending champions, but Guarachi chose not to participate this year and Krawczyk chose to compete in Stuttgart instead.
Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková defeated Gabriela Dabrowski and Demi Schuurs in the final, 6–4, 6–3 to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2021 Madrid Open. It marked the duo's seventh career WTA Tour doubles title together, as well as Krejčíková's eighth individual doubles title and Siniaková's 10th.
Lyudmyla Kichenok and Makoto Ninomiya defeated Caroline Dolehide and Storm Sanders in the final, 6–4, 6–7(3–7), [10–8], to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2021 Nottingham Open. Though it was their first title together as a team, it marked Kichenok's fifth career doubles title on the WTA Tour and Ninomiya's third.
