The 2020 International Maturidi Conference was an international scientific-practical conference, sponsored by the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, held over three days, from 3 to 5 March 2020, in the city of Samarkand under the title of "Imam Abu Mansur Maturidi and the Teachings of Maturidiyya: The Past and the Present" (Arabic : الإمام أبو منصور الماتريدي والتعاليم الماتريدية: التاريخ والحاضر).

Contents

The conference was organized jointly with the Committee on Religious Affairs under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Imam Bukhari International Scientific Research Center (IBISRC), the Center for Islamic Civilization, the Muslims Board of Uzbekistan, the International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan, and the Egyptian Al-Azhar Complex. The main purpose of the conference is to further study of Imam Maturidi's scientific heritage, to reveal the essence of the teachings of Maturidiyya against destructive sects, throughout the world promotion of the invaluable contribution to Islamic civilization of Uzbekistan as the "Country of Great Scholars", [4] and shedding light on the scientific and civilizational legacy of scholars from Transoxiana. [5]

The participants at the conference discussed some issues related to Islam and Muslims, such as: [6]

  1. Teachings of Maturidiyya and modernity.
  2. Preservation and development of religious values in the modern state.

Participants

The conference witnessed the participation of delegations representing many Islamic bodies and scientific universities, as well as scholars from Uzbekistan, and over 70 scholars and thinkers from the al-Azhar, as well as scholars of the Council of Senior Scholars, Muslim Council of Elders, and the Bulgarian Islamic Academy. [7] [8] In addition, it was attended by scholars, religious leaders, and directors of scientific and research centres from over 20 countries, including Algeria, Jordan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey, Pakistan, Bosnia Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Ukraine, Switzerland, Germany, and United Kingdom. Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed El-Tayeb is an Egyptian Islamic scholar and the current Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Al-Azhar Al Sharif and former president of al-Azhar University. He was appointed by the Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak, following the death of Mohamed Sayed Tantawy in 2010. He is from Kurna, Luxor Governorate in Upper Egypt, and he belongs to a Sunni Muslim family.

The Grand Imam of al-Azhar, also known as Grand Sheikh of al-Azhar, currently Ahmed el-Tayeb, is a prestigious and a prominent official title in Egypt and Islamic world. He is considered by most Muslims to be the highest authority in Sunni Islamic thought and Islamic jurisprudence and holds great influence on followers of the theological Ash'ari and Maturidi traditions worldwide. The Grand Imam heads the Al-Azhar Al Sharif, al-Azhar Mosque, and by extension al-Azhar University, and is responsible for official religious matters along with the Grand Mufti of Egypt.

Abū al-Khayr Muḥammad Ayyūb ʿAlī al-Māturīdī, or simply Ayub Ali, was a Bangladeshi Islamic scholar, author and educationist. He was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1976 by the Government of Bangladesh.

The 2016 conference on Sunni Islam in Grozny was convened to define the term "Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah", i.e. who are "the people of Sunnah and majority Muslim community", and oppose Takfiri groups. The conference was held in the Chechen Republic capital of Grozny from 25 to 27 August 2016, sponsored by the president of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, and attended by approximately 200 Muslim scholars from 30 countries, especially from Russia, Egypt, Syria, Libya, Kuwait, Sudan, Jordan, etc. at the invitation of Yemeni Sufi preacher, Ali al-Jifri.

Abu al-Mu'in al-Nasafi, was considered to be the most important Central Asian Hanafi theologian in the Maturidite school of Sunni Islam after Imam Abu Mansur al-Maturidi, provided a fairly detailed account of al-Maturidi Central Asian predecessors.

Tabsirat al-Adilla fi Usul al-Din: 'ala Tariqat al-Imam Abi Mansur al-Maturidi, better known as Tabsirat al-Adilla, is considered as the second most important kalam book of the Maturidite school, after Kitab al-Tawhid of al-Maturidi himself, composed by Abu al-Mu'in al-Nasafi.

Akmal al-Din al-Babarti, was a Hanafi scholar, jurist, scholastic Maturidi theologian, mufassir, muhaddis, grammarian (nahawi), an eloquent orator, and prolific author with more than 40 works to his name.

Al-Hakim Abu al-Qasim Ishaq al-Samarqandi, was a Sunni-Hanafi scholar, qadi (judge), and sage from Transoxania who studied Sufism in Balkh with Abu Bakr al-Warraq. Some sources describe him as a student of al-Maturidi in fiqh and kalam.

Abu al-Thana' Mahmud b. Zayd al-Lamishi was a Hanafi-Maturidi scholar from Transoxiana, who was alive in the late 5th and early 6th Islamic centuries.

Abu al-Barakat al-Nasafi, was an eminent Hanafi scholar, Qur'an exegete (mufassir), and a Maturidi theologian. He is perhaps best known for his Tafsir Madarik al-Tanzil wa Haqa'iq al-Ta'wil.

Al-Azhar Al-Sharif is an Islamic scientific body and the largest religious institution in Egypt. The Hazrati Imam complex is an architectural monument dating from the 16th to 20th centuries, located in the Olmazor district of Tashkent city, Uzbekistan. The complex consists of the Moʻyi Muborak madrasa, the Qaffol Shoshi mausoleum, the Baroqxon Madrasa, the Hazrati Imam mosque, the Tillashayx mosque, and the Imam al-Bukhari Islamic Institute. The ensemble was built near the grave of Hazrati Imam, the first imam-khatib of Tashkent, a scholar, one of the first Islamic preachers in Tashkent, a poet and an artist.

Ubaydulla Uvatov was a renowned Uzbek Orientalist, historian, Doctor of Historical Sciences, and professor. He extensively researched the history of the Timurid era, Central Asian cultural heritage, scientific studies in manuscriptology, and historiography. He was also the author of significant documentary films and theater scripts.
