The 2020 Men's European Water Polo Championship was the 34th edition of the major European water polo tournament for national teams. It was held at the Danube Arena in Budapest, Hungary, from 14 to 26 January 2020. [2] [3]
Hungary claimed their 13th title by defeating Spain in the final. [4]
LEN announced the choice of Budapest as host for the competition on 9 July 2016. [5] All the matches were played at the Danube Arena.

Sixteen teams were allowed to the tournament. The qualification was as follows:

The sixteen teams were split in four groups with four teams each. The first classified team of each group directly qualified for the quarterfinals, the second and third teams played each other in cross group format to qualify for the quarterfinals. [6]
The draw of the preliminary round's pools was held in Budapest on 22 October 2019. [7] [8] The teams were divided into four groups of four teams each; according to LEN rules the first batch for the draw was composed by the best four teams of the previous edition, the second batch by the teams ranked from fifth to eighth in 2018, while the third and fourth batch were composed respectively by the teams ranked first and second in the four qualification groups. The 2008 EHF European Men's Handball Championship was held in Norway from 17 to 27 January, in the cities of Bergen, Drammen, Lillehammer, Stavanger and Trondheim. Denmark won the tournament with Croatia second and France third.
The water polo tournaments at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place at the Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center in Kōtō. Twenty-two teams competed in the tournament, an increase of two from the previous editions. Men's Water polo was also the last final played before the closing ceremony.
The 2016 Men's European Water Polo Championship was held in Belgrade, Serbia.
The 2018 European Women's Handball Championship was held in France in from 29 November to 16 December 2018. It was the first time France hosts the women's tournament. The matches were played in Brest, Montbéliard, Nancy, Nantes and Paris.
The European qualification for the 2017 World Women's Handball Championship in Germany was played over two rounds. The 2017 hosts Germany and the 2015 Champion Norway qualified automatically for the World Championship.

Originally, Israel had been selected as host and the competition was slated to be held in Netanya, from 3 to 16 January 2024. Due to security concerns after the breakout of the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, LEN announced the Championship would be hosted elsewhere.
The 2024 Women's European Water Polo Championship was the 20th edition of the tournament. It was held in Eindhoven, Netherlands from 5 to 13 January 2024. It was scheduled to be held in Netanya, Israel, But the competition was taken away from Israel for security reasons after the 2023 Israel–Hamas war commenced. This edition was the first one to be played by 16 teams.
The men's qualification for the Olympic water polo tournament occured between July 2023 and February 2024, allocating twelve teams for the final tournament. As the host nation, France reserved a direct spot each for the men's team.
