The Coastal Athletic Association (CAA), formerly the Colonial Athletic Association, is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA's Division I whose full members are located in East Coast states, from Massachusetts to South Carolina. Most of its members are public universities, and the conference is headquartered in Richmond. The CAA was historically a Southern conference until the addition of four schools in the Northeastern United States after the turn of the 21st century, which added geographic balance to the conference.
Stephanie Gaitley is the head basketball coach of the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights women's basketball. She has served as head basketball coach at Fordham University, Monmouth University, and Long Island University. During her six seasons at LIU, she posted a 95–82 record. In 2007, she guided LIU to a school record 22 wins, and the top overall seed in the NEC tournament. She was named the 2006-07 NEC coach of the year for her efforts. She led LIU to two 20+ win seasons, and the first WNIT appearance in school history.
The Stony Brook Seawolves football program is the collegiate football team that represents Stony Brook University at the NCAA Division I level. The program participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision and currently competes in CAA Football, the technically separate football league operated by the multi-sports Coastal Athletic Association. The Monmouth Hawks refer to the 23 sports teams representing Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey. The Hawks compete in the NCAA Division I and are members of the Colonial Athletic Association, joining on July 1, 2022. The football team became an FCS Independent for the 2013 season, and moved to the Big South Conference on July 1, 2014. The women's bowling program was a charter member of the Southland Bowling League, a single-sport conference formed in January 2015, but moved that sport to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference after the 2017–18 season.

Monmouth finished the season 11–3 overall and 6–0 in Big South play to win the conference title. The Hawks received the Big South's automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs. They defeated Holy Cross in the first round before losing to James Madison in the second round.

The Men's College World Series, consisting of the eight remaining teams in the NCAA tournament and held annually in Omaha, Nebraska, at Charles Schwab Field Omaha, ended on June 26, 2023, with LSU winning the title.
