Presidency trio

The Czech Republic's second Presidency of the Council of the European Union was held between 1 July and 31 December 2022. The country previously held the presidency from 1 January until 30 June 2009. [1] [2] The Czech presidency is part of the 11th Presidency Trio, together with France and Sweden. This trio is the first in the third cycle of presidencies. [3] The presidency occurred under the leadership of Petr Fiala's Cabinet, [4] though preparations started under the government of Andrej Babiš. [5]

Following the 2021 Czech legislative election, Fiala replaced Babiš as Prime Minister, and appointed Mikuláš Bek as Minister for European Affairs to help coordinate the presidency, along with Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský. [4] On 9 June 2022 the slogan of the presidency was announced as "Europe as a task: rethink, rebuild, repower." [6] The Czech Presidency started on 1 July 2022 with an opening ceremony in Litomyšl. [7]

Parliamentary elections were held in the Czech Republic on 8 and 9 October 2021. All 200 members of the Chamber of Deputies were elected, with the leader of the resulting government to become the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. Following the 2017 parliamentary elections, the country had been ruled by a minority government consisting of ANO 2011 (ANO), led by prime minister Andrej Babiš, and the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD), led by interior minister Jan Hamáček, with confidence and supply support from the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM) until April 2021. The largest opposition party was the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), followed by the Czech Pirate Party. Other parties in the Chamber of Deputies included SPD, TOP 09, STAN, and KDU-ČSL.

Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union occurred in the first half of 2009. On 1 January 2009, Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek became the President of the Council of the European Union. When Topolánek's cabinet lost a vote of no-confidence, he was replaced by Jan Fischer on 8 May 2009. Presidency went over to Sweden on 1 July 2009.

Spolu is a Czech centre-right political alliance formed for the 2021 legislative election, composed of the Civic Democratic Party, KDU-ČSL, and TOP 09. As of the 2021 Czech election it governs the Czech Republic in a coalition with the Pirates and Mayors alliance.

The leadership election for ANO 2011 was held on 12 February 2022. It was originally set to be held in February 2021 but was postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic in the Czech Republic. The incumbent leader Andrej Babiš is expected to run unopposed. In February 2021 the election was postponed by one year till February 2022.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cabinet of Petr Fiala</span> Current government of the Czech Republic

The Cabinet of Petr Fiala is the current government of the Czech Republic, appointed on 17 December 2021. Following elections in October 2021, President Miloš Zeman asked Petr Fiala, as the leader of the Spolu alliance, to form a new government. On 17 November 2021 Fiala presented Zeman with the names of his proposed cabinet, and Zeman agreed to appoint Fiala as the new Prime Minister on 28 November 2021.

Mikuláš Bek is a Czech musicologist and politician who has been serving as Minister of Education, Youth and Sports in Petr Fiala's Cabinet since May 2023. He previously served as the Minister of EU Affairs from December 2021 to May 2023.

Czech Republic First! was a mass public demonstration on 3 September 2022 in Wenceslas Square in Prague, expressing dissatisfaction with the government of Petr Fiala and the government's approach to the ongoing energy crisis, inflation, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to police, about 70,000 people took part in the demonstration. A number of politicians and activists participated in the protest or expressed their support for the protesters.
