On August 28, 2022, a 19-year-old man allegedly opened fire in Detroit, Michigan, United States, randomly killing three people on the city's streets over a span of two hours and fifteen minutes. A fourth person and a dog were injured. [1] Each person was shot in separate locations, and had no known connection to the shooter nor any known gang affiliation.[ citation needed ] The suspected shooter was apprehended at his house in Detroit about 14 hours later, and was formally charged two days later.
At 4:45 a.m., the suspect shot a 28-year-old man named Chayne Lee without provocation, walked away and then returned to fire more shots. [1] This victim's body was found in the doorway of a church. [2] He had been shot multiple times, including after he had fallen down. [3]
About 30 minutes later, police responded to a 911 call three blocks away. While officers were investigating this shooting, they heard gunshots that led them to the 19700 block of Livernois Avenue. They found a 44-year-old woman had been shot and killed. [4] According to Wayne County Major Crimes Commander Michael McGinnis, the shooter initially left, but then he returned and shot her again. A 16-year-old girl was then shot and killed around 5:30 a.m., [3] [5] The fourth shooting occurred at 7:10 a.m. The 80-year-old victim and his dog both survived. [5] [6] [7]
The 19-year-old male suspect, Dontae Smith, was arrested at his house in Detroit. [4] [8] He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of assault with intent to murder, one count of third-degree animal cruelty, and five counts of felony firearm on August 31. [2] Smith's family said he was hallucinating before the shooting, thought that his family members wanted to kill him, and believed the world was ending. A clinical psychologist believes Smith is suffering from psychosis, or another mental illness that causes delusions. Smith's bond is set at $1,000,000. [9]
On July 7, 2011, a gunman killed seven people and wounded two others in a spree killing in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The deaths took place in two homes, with the two non-fatal gunshot injuries taking place on the road. The suspected gunman, Rodrick Shonte Dantzler, was pursued by police on a lengthy car chase which eventually left his vehicle disabled in a highway woodline and after holding hostages in a nearby house for several hours, took his own life. Those killed included Dantzler's estranged wife, their daughter, his former girlfriend, and members of the other victims' families. One of the non-fatal victims was also acquainted with Dantzler.
On the night of February 20, 2016, a spree shooting took place at an apartment complex, a Kia car dealership, and outside a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Six people were killed, and two others were injured.
On April 18, 2017, a racially motivated shooting spree occurred in Fresno, California, leaving three white people dead. The gunman, Kori Ali Muhammad was convicted of four murders and four attempted murders. Muhammad said he went on his shooting spree because of his hatred for white people and particularly white men. Muhammad fired off 17 shots, shooting and killing three men, shooting at and missing another three men, and shooting at a vehicle with passengers inside. The passengers of the vehicle were unharmed. All of Muhammad's victims were white.
Kenyel William Brown was an American criminal and prime suspect in a series of murders which occurred in three cities in Wayne County, Michigan, between December 7, 2019, and February 22, 2020. On February 24, his whereabouts were discovered, but during the arrest attempt, Brown shot himself in the head. He survived his injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he died four days later due to complications, without regaining consciousness. The killings caused a stir both in the city and the entire state after it was found that Brown, a dangerous recidivist, worked as a police informant.
On February 9, 2021, a mass shooting and bombing occurred at a medical clinic in Buffalo, Minnesota, United States. Just before 11:00 a.m. CST, Gregory Paul Ulrich, a 67-year-old man, shot five people at Allina Health's Buffalo Crossroads facility. One victim, Lindsay Overbay, died, and three others were critically injured from gunshot wounds. All of the victims were medical clinic staff. During the attack, Ulrich discharged three improvised explosive devices, one of which failed to detonate. He surrendered to police who were dispatched to the clinic, and he was taken into custody. He admitted to authorities that he fired on people inside the clinic and set off bombs.
On November 30, 2021, a mass shooting occurred at Oxford High School in the Detroit exurb of Oxford Township, Michigan, United States. Ethan Robert Crumbley, age 15, armed with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, killed four students and injured seven people, including a teacher. Authorities arrested and charged Crumbley as an adult for 24 crimes, including murder and terrorism. Crumbley pleaded guilty to all of the charges in October 2022 and was sentenced in December 2023 to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 24 years.
Larme Price, known as the Thrill Killer, is an American serial killer who murdered four immigrants in New York in 2003. Price claimed he carried out the murders in revenge for the September 11 attacks, and said he was driven to kill by a paranoid hatred of Arabs. Despite this claim, only one of his victims was Middle Eastern. Price confessed to the murders, was found guilty, and was sentenced to 150 years in prison without parole. He remains incarcerated at the Sullivan Correctional Facility.
On July 25, 2022, multiple shootings occurred in the City of Langley and Township of Langley in British Columbia, Canada. Two people were killed in the shootings, and two others were injured. The shooter, who was known to police, was later located near the Willowbrook Shopping Centre and killed in a shootout with Langley Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team.
Mervin Ray Hughes, known as The Serial Shooter, is an American serial killer who committed at least eight drive-by shootings during a two-week spree in Oakland, California, in 1999, killing two people. He had previously been convicted of manslaughter in a 1986 shooting death and was suspected of killing a man in another city in 1992. Hughes was found guilty of his known crimes and was sentenced to death in 2005.
On September 7, 2022, three people were killed and three others were injured after a gunman went on a shooting spree in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. The attack was livestreamed on Facebook Live.
The Stockton serial shootings were a series of fatal shootings that occurred in Stockton and Oakland, California, between April 2021 and September 2022. The shootings have been linked together by ballistic tests, but police have not revealed if the same gun was used in every shooting. On October 15, 2022, a Stockton man, Wesley Brownlee, was arrested in connection to the shootings. On December 27, Brownlee was charged with an additional five charges.
On October 13, 2022, a mass shooting occurred in the Hedingham neighborhood of Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. Five people were killed, and two others were injured. The accused, a male juvenile named Austin Thompson, was detained after being cornered by police at a nearby residence and was in critical condition from a gunshot wound to the head sustained during the incident. Thompson survived his head injury and has begun to receive physical rehabilitation. He was transferred from a hospital to the medical unit of a juvenile correctional facility.
Lawrence Paul Mills III is an American serial killer who murdered two women, one of whom was pregnant, by running them over with his car in Detroit, Michigan, between October and December 2017. After being arrested on April 24, 2020, he was sentenced to 28–48 years in prison the following year. He is also suspected of at least two other hit-and-runs, one of which was fatal.
Alexander Hernandez is an American serial killer who murdered five people during a series of drive-by shootings in the Los Angeles Metropolitan area of California between March and August 2014. He targeted random people and dogs, murdering five people, injuring 11 others, and killing two dogs. He was later convicted of the crimes and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
On September 2, 2024, a mass shooting occurred aboard a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Blue Line train as it traveled between Oak Park station and Harlem station. Four people were killed at random. The alleged shooter was taken into custody and charged with four counts of first-degree murder.
