The 2022 Phillips 66 International Team Trials was held from April 26 to 30, 2022 in Greensboro, North Carolina at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. [1] [2] [3] Contested swimming events were conducted in a 50-meter (long course) pool. The competition served as the selection meet for determining the swim team to represent the United States at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships, 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, and 2022 Mel Zajac Junior International. [1] It was held separate from the 2022 US National Championships. [2] [3]

Host selection

In August 2021, Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina was announced as host of the International Team Trials in part due to scheduling conflicts in Indianapolis, Indiana with the 2022 FDIC International, which had already been scheduled and resulted in hotels being booked during the date range of interest. [1] [4]

Overall results

All events were swum in a heats, finals format except for the 800 meter and 1500 meter freestyle events which were broken into slowest heats and a timed final where competitors swam the event once. Event finals were broken into a, b, and c finals with a and b finals open to anyone and the c final reserved for junior swimmers.

Key:  Highlighted swimmers fulfilled the qualification criteria and were named to the team roster for the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in the event. a Annie Lazor, was selected for the 2022 World Aquatics Championships team in the 50 meter breaststroke based on her second-place finish in an Olympic event, the 100 meter breaststroke, and swimming a FINA "A" cut time, 31.04 seconds, in the first 50 meters of the 100 meter breaststroke event, instead of being selected based on results from the 50 meter breaststroke event, which she chose not to compete in at the Trials. International team qualifiers

2022 World Aquatics Championships team

The following pool swimmers qualified for the United States team in at least one event for the 2022 World Aquatics Championships, held in Budapest, Hungary in June and July. [5] [7] [8] [9] Pool swimmers who qualified for the World Championships took part in an out-of-country training camp, in Rijeka, Croatia in early to mid-June, training all-together prior to the start of competition. [23] [24] USA Swimming previously used Croatia as a pre-competition training camp base leading up to the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, in Kazan, Russia, and the 2017 World Aquatics Championships, also in Budapest, Hungary. Nicolas Fink is an American five-time world champion in breaststroke events. He is a world record holder in the short course 4×100 meter medley relay and 4×50 meter mixed medley relay. He is the Americas record holder in the short course 50 meter breaststroke, 100 meter breaststroke, and 200 meter breaststroke as well as the American record holder in the long course 50 meter breaststroke. In the 50 meter breaststroke, he won the World Short Course titles in 2021 and 2022 and World Long Course title in 2022. Michael Charles Andrew is an American competitive swimmer and an Olympic gold medalist. He was the 2016 world champion in the 100 meter individual medley. At his first Olympic Games, the 2020 Summer Olympics, he won a gold medal and set a world record as part of the 4x100 meter medley relay, placed fourth in the 100 meter breaststroke, fourth in the 50 meter freestyle, and fifth in the 200 meter individual medley. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, he won a gold medal in the 4×100 meter medley relay, swimming backstroke in the preliminaries, and placed ninth in the 100 meter backstroke.

Natalie Anisha Hinds is an American professional swimmer specializing in freestyle and butterfly events. She made her international championships debut at 27 years of age, winning a bronze medal in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics, swimming in both the prelims and the final. She placed fourth in the 800 meter freestyle at the 2020 Summer Olympics, where she was the youngest member of the US Olympic Team at 15 years of age.

Shaine Casas is an American professional swimmer. He is an Americas record holder in the short course 4×50 meter medley relay, swimming the butterfly leg of the relay. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships, he won the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke, a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke, and placed seventh in the 50-meter backstroke. In 2022, at the year's World Aquatics Championships, he won the bronze medal in the 200-metre backstroke. Trenton Jeffrey Julian is an American competitive swimmer. He is a world record holder in the short course 4×200 meter freestyle relay and 4×100 meter medley relay. He won a gold medal in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the 2019 World University Games. He followed this win up with gold medals in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the 2021 World Short Course Championships, 2022 World Aquatic Championships, and 2022 World Short Course Championships. In the 4×100 meter medley relay, he won a world title and gold medal at the 2022 World Short Course Championships, swimming butterfly on each the prelims and finals relay.

Gianluca Urlando is an American competitive swimmer. He is a world junior record holder in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay and the 4×100 meter mixed freestyle relay. He is the American record holder in the 100 yard backstroke. At the 2022 NCAA Division I Championships, he became the first person to swim the 100 yard backstroke and 100 yard butterfly each in less than 44 seconds. At the 2019 World Junior Championships, he won gold medals in the 200 meter freestyle, 200 meter butterfly, 4×100 meter freestyle relay, 4×200 meter freestyle relay, and 4×100 meter mixed freestyle relay.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kaitlyn Dobler</span> American swimmer

Kaitlyn Dobler is an American competitive swimmer. She is the 2022 NCAA Division I champion in the 100-yard breaststroke. She won the national title in the 100-meter breaststroke at the 2022 US National Championships. At the 2019 World Junior Championships, she won the silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke and the bronze medal in the 50-meter breaststroke, in addition to winning a gold medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay, swimming the breaststroke leg of the relay in the final.

Zhier Fan is an American competitive swimmer. He is a world junior record holder in the 4×50-meter mixed medley relay. At the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, he won gold medals in the 100-meter breaststroke, 4×100-meter medley relay, 4×100-meter mixed medley relay, and won the b-final of the 200-meter breaststroke.
