The 2023 South American summit was a summit organized and hosted by the government of Brazil "to deal with the importance of seeking collective solutions in the name of a common destiny and to reposition the region as an important actor on the global stage". The summit was held on May 30, 2023, in the city of Brasília. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Brazil has put four agenda priorities for the dialogue: [1]
With the exception of Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, all the other South American heads of state attended the event. [5] Peru was represented by the President of the Council of Ministers, Alberto Otárola. [6]
The Summit issued the Brasilia Consensus, [7] in which it decided to promote cooperation in the areas of health, food security, disaster prevention and mitigation, infrastructure and logistics, energy, digital transformation, defence and security, combating transnational organized crime and cybersecurity. The Union of South American Nations (USAN), sometimes also referred to as the South American Union, abbreviated in Spanish as UNASUR and in Portuguese as UNASUL, is an intergovernmental regional organization. It once comprised twelve South American countries; as of 2019, most have withdrawn. It was set up by Hugo Chavez to counteract the influence of the United States in the region.

The Council of South American Defense is a mechanism that aims to promote the exchange of safety among the countries that make up the Union of South American Nations, such as military exchanges, experiences in peacekeeping missions, military exercises, confidence-building measures, and mutual and co-ordinated assistance in areas of natural disasters.
The 6th BRICS summit was the sixth annual diplomatic meeting of the BRICS, a grouping of major emerging economies that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It was hosted by Brazil, as the first host country of the current five-year summit cycle; the host city was Fortaleza. Though Brazil had previously hosted a four-member BRIC summit in April 2010, 2014 marked its first full BRICS summit; the 2010 summit in Brasília did not officially include South Africa, who were only invited as guests as a prelude to their gaining full membership in December 2010. Argentine President Cristina Kirchner was a special guest of the summit, and the BRICS leaders met with their UNASUR counterparts shortly after. The 6th BRICS summit resulted in the official inauguration of the New Development Bank, a multilateral development bank intended as an alternative to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
Simone Nassar Tebet is a Brazilian academic, lawyer, and politician who has served as the Brazilian Minister of Planning and Budget since 5 January 2023. She previously was Senator for Mato Grosso do Sul from 2015 to 2023, Vice-Governor of Mato Grosso do Sul from 2011 to 2014, and mayor of Três Lagoas from 2005 to 2010.

The second presidency of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva started on 1 January 2023, when he was inaugurated as the 39th President of Brazil. Lula was elected for a third term as President of Brazil on 30 October 2022, by obtaining 50.9% of the valid votes in the 2022 Brazilian general election, defeating his far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro. Lula is the first Brazilian president to ever be elected more than twice as well as being the oldest person to ever be elected president in Brazil.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Geraldo Alckmin were inaugurated as 39th president of Brazil and 26th vice president, respectively, on 1 January 2023, in a ceremony held in the National Congress in Brasília, beginning the third Lula administration. At the age of 77, Lula became the oldest president-elect to assume office and the only president in Brazilian history to serve two non-consecutive terms in office through the democratic vote.
The 2024 G20 Rio de Janeiro summit was the nineteenth meeting of Group of Twenty (G20), a Heads of State and Government meeting held at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro from 18–19 November 2024. It was the first G20 summit to be hosted in Brazil. Additionally, It marked the first full G20 summit with the African Union as a member, following its inclusion during the previous summit in 2023.
The presidential transition of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's second presidency officially began on November 3, 2022, and ended with his inauguration on January 1, 2023. Then vice president-elect Geraldo Alckmin was appointed as the chair of Lula's transition team on November 1, 2022.

Many journalists compared the events of the 2023 Brazilian Congress attack to the 6 January United States Capitol attack almost exactly two years earlier. Several newspapers, including O Globo, Veja, and Folha de S.Paulo, characterised what happened as terrorism. O Estado de S. Paulo and El Mundo described the event as an attempted coup d'état. On 9 January, tens of thousands of people attended rallies against the rioters in many Brazilian cities. Supreme Federal Court considered the attacks as terrorist acts.
The 2023 Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization Summit, also known as the 2023Amazon countries summit or the 2023 Amazon Summit, was a multilateral event which took place from 8 to 9, August 2023 in the Brazilian city of Belém. Member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), whose headquarters are in Brazil, attended the summit to discuss regional cooperation in the Amazon basin regarding environment, security, economy and development, among other topics.
