The 2024 Dominican Republic municipal elections were held on 18 February 2024. Mayors and local councillors across the country were elected. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Conduct

Voting took place between the hours of 07:00-17:00 at polling stations across the country. [5] Election day is officially recognized as a non-working day, as per the provisions outlined in Article 229 of the Law on the Electoral Regime. [6] [7] [8]

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States began activities in the country on 13 February 2024. [9] The Mission observed the electoral organization, electoral technology, electoral justice, political-electoral financing, and political participation of women in the municipal elections. The Mission will present a report with insights and recommendations for future elections in the Dominican Republic. The OAS Mission in the country is headed by former Foreign Minister of Paraguay, Eladio Loizaga.

Results

According to the first bulletins from the Central Electoral Board, the Modern Revolutionary Party would have achieved victory in 122 municipalities in the country, obtaining close to 70% of the national total. [10] The Modern Revolutionary Party secured key victories in densely populated regions including the National District, Santo Domingo Este, Santo Domingo Norte, Los Alcarrizo, Santiago, La Vega, San Francisco de Macorís and San Cristóbal. [11]

The People's Force denounced an abusive use of state resources in favor of the ruling party and the initiation of legal actions before the Central Electoral Board. [12]

Aside from the 167 deputies of the National Assembly who are eligible to be re-elected, the new National Electoral Council president announced that the assembly would increase by 110 seats, for a total of 277 deputies to be elected.

The Bolivian constitution allows the President and Vice-President to put themselves forward for re-election only once, limiting the number of terms to two, and the elections took place after in 2016 a referendum to amend the constitution was rejected, but that the Supreme Court of Justice ruled that all public offices would have no term limits despite what was established in the constitution and allowing Morales to run for a fourth term.

The elections were rescheduled to March 15, 2020.

General elections were held in El Salvador on 4 February 2024 to elect the president, vice president and all 60 deputies of the Legislative Assembly. This was followed by a second set of elections on 3 March 2024 in which voters elected all 44 mayors and municipal councils of the country's municipalities and all 20 of El Salvador's deputies to the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN).
