Subdistrict council elections

The subdistrict council elections will be held in 5 phases. Four of them took place in 2024. The 5th phase of the local government election will be held in January 2025. [3]

The first phase of sub-district elections was held on 8 May 2024. Chairmen competition was between of 139 seats. [12] A low voter turnout of 36% was seen in election. [13]

The forth phase of sub-district elections was held on 5 June 2024. Chairmen competition was between of 60 seats [12] A low voter turnout of 34.33% was seen in election. [21]

Controversies

Boycotting election

BNP and its like minded parties boycotted the sub-district elections saying that they will not go in election under a autocracy government. [23] However, despite the boycott some party members from BNP contested in election. In result BNP expelled 73 members who were participating in the election. [11] Other party like Jatiya Party (Ershad) and Awami League allied parties also showed no interest in participating in the election. Leading the sub-district election be a more of a competition between Awami League candidates. [24]

Nepotism by Awami League ministers

Many top Awami League ministers and party lawmakers was accused of nepotism for announcing the names of their close relatives as chairman candidates for the upazila polls. [25] Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader concerned over nepotism among AL candidates. [26] Many AL ministers was accused of threatening their opposition candidates or the people of sub-district. [27]

Violence

Many candidates supporters had clash with each other in the name of vote rigging. [28] Several people were injured and some were considered dead during the brutal violence. [29] [30] Most of those violence was accused of done by Awami League candidates in the fear of losing. [31]

Low voters turnout

The sub-district election saw the lowest vote turnout in last 16 years. [32] Around all phases was having a turnout of 30-40%. 2nd phase of sub-district had the most vote turnout of only 37.67%. [15] According to the Chief Election Commissioner, the vote turnout is low due to a "lack of widespread political participation". [33]

Habibur Rahman Habib is a Bangladeshi politician and a former member of Jatiya Sangsad representing the Sylhet-3 constituency.

Muhammad Sayful Alam was a Bangladeshi politician and teacher. He was a member of the East Pakistan Legislative Assembly. He had made extensive contributions to the overall development of Gowainghat Upazila.

Kheora is a village in the east-central part of Bangladesh. It is located at Mehari Union under Kasba Upazila in Brahmanbaria district of Chittagong division. Administratively, the village is divided into Ward No. 7 and 8 of Mehari Union. The village is known as the birthplace of Hindu spiritual saint Anandamayi Ma.

In 2023, by-elections are scheduled to be held for vacant seats in the Jatiya Sangsad, the legislative body of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. In the Jatiya Sangsad, MPs for 300 seats are elected directly and MPs for 50 reserved women seats are elected indirectly by the MPs, thus popular by-elections are only held in the direct seats. As the 11th parliament is scheduled to be expire on 29 January 2024 and the Election Commission has announced to hold the next Bangladeshi general election between late December 2023 to early January 2024, all candidates elected by these by-polls will be members of the 11th Jatiya Sangsad.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mohit Ur Rahman Shanto</span> Bangladeshi Politician

Mohammad Mohit Ur Rahman Shanto is a Bangladeshi politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Mymensingh-4 constituency. He won for the Bangladesh Awami League in the 2024 Bangladeshi general election. Shanto is the son of former religion minister Matiur Rahman. He is a councillor of the Bangladesh Cricket Board from Mymensingh.

Saurendra Nath Chakrabhartty is a retired Bangladeshi government official and politician from Awami League. He is a former member of Jatiya Sangsad representing the Naogaon-3 constituency. Prior to this, he had served as senior secretary in the Department of Statistics and Information Management of Ministry of Planning.

The 2024 Bangladesh upazila elections will be held in five phases, four of which took place in 2024. The fifth phase will occur in January 2025.

2024 Bangladesh post-resignation violence refers to the violence that took place in Bangladesh after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, targeting Awami League supporters, religious minorities, government and security officials. On the day of the resignation 25 police officers were killed. According to the Daily Sun at least 119 were killed that day. According to Prothom Alo 1494 scuptures and monuments were vandalized across Bangladesh after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina.
