The 2025 Chhattisgarh train collision was a fatal railway accident that occurred on 4 November 2025 near Bilaspur in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh. A local passenger train travelling between Gevra and Bilaspur Junction collided with a stationary cargo train on the Bilaspur-Katni section, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 people and injuries to around 20 others. [1] [2]

Contents

The collision occurred when the passenger train appears to have passed a signal at danger and struck the cargo train from behind around 4 p.m. IST, causing significant damage to the passenger train's engine and the lead coach, which was found atop a freight wagon. [3]

The accident caused disruption of rail traffic due to damage to overhead electric wiring and signaling systems; train services were temporarily suspended but later resumed following repair work. Indian Railways initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash and announced compensation for victims' families and the injured. The Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Vishnu Deo Sai, expressed condolences and assured state support for relief and rehabilitation efforts. [1] [2] [3]

Crash

The first bogie of the passenger train and the last bogie of the cargo train collided near the station at around 4 p.m. [4] [5] The collision was so strong that some coaches climbed over each other. [6] Overhead wires and the signalling system were damaged in the collision. [7]

Victims

At least eight people were killed in the collision. Among the dead was the driver of the passenger train. Two to three other people remain trapped in a mangled coach of the passenger train and are presumed dead as rescue operations continue. The number of injuries has been reported as anywhere from 14 to 20. [4] [8]

Aftermath

Congress leader T. S. Singh Deo called for the resignation of the railway minister, saying the accident was caused by extreme negligence. [5] The government announced that Rs 10 lakh will be given to the families of the deceased, Rs 5 lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 1 lakh to the minor injured. [4] Traffic on the Bilaspur–Katni section was disrupted with several trains being cancelled or diverted. [7]

Investigation

The Railway Board said the accident was likely caused by the passenger train overshooting a red signal. [5]
