Aryna Sabalenka is the three-time defending champion. ^{[1] [2]} By reaching the semifinals, she claimed the year-end world No. 1 ranking for the second year in a row.^{[ citation needed ]}

At the conclusion of the tournament, Ekaterina Alexandrova made her debut in the top ten of the WTA rankings. ^[3] This was the first edition of the Wuhan Open where all four semifinalists were ranked in the top ten of the WTA rankings.
