Qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup for South America will begin in August 2024, with eight teams competing for one direct qualification spot into the final tournament. The runner up will play the bottom side ranked in the 2025 World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup for a second direct place in the final tournament and the loser progressing to the Final Qualification Tournament. The third ranked side will also qualify for a place in the Final Qualification Tournament. [1]
Qualifying will begin with two elimination matches between the bottom four ranked teams in South America; Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru and Venezuela. The first round will consist of a semi final and final format, with based on World Rugby Rankings dictating the semi-final match-ups, with the winners advancing to play each other in the final. The winner of the final, then plays the bottom placed side from Round 2, to advance to the final round of qualification.
Round 2 features Brazil, Chile and Paraguay in a round robin, format. The top two sides advance to round 4, whilst the bottom placed side will play-off against the winner of Round 1 to remain in qualification contention.
Round 4, will see the top two sides from Round 1 and the winner of the Round 1/2 play-off, join Uruguay in the final stage of qualification. This round will be round robin format, with the winner will directly qualifying for the World Cup as Sudamérica Rugby 1. The runner-up will face the bottom ranked side from the final round of the Pacific qualification process in a Sudamérica / Pacific play-off match to qualify for the World Cup. The third placed side, advances to the Final Qualification Tournament.
Eight teams will compete during for the South America qualifiers for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, with Argentina the only team thus far qualified from the Region. (Rankings as of first qualification match in this region)

The first round was contested by four teams in a knockout format, which was held in Medellín, Colombia. It saw Colombia (42) play Costa Rica (93) and Venezuela (78) play Peru (80). [2]

The playoffs, play-offs, postseason or finals of a sports league are a competition played after the regular season by the top competitors to determine the league champion or a similar accolade. For qualification purposes, the two Americas regions Rugby Americas North and Sudamérica Rugby formed the Americas region to compete for the two Americas berths in the World Cup.
The 2021 Men's Rugby League World Cup qualification was the qualifying process which will decide the 8 teams that would join the 8 quarter-finalists from the 2017 World Cup including the hosts England, who received an automatic spot, at the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. The process commenced in June 2018, with the commencement of the 2018–19 Rugby League European Championship C tournament, which acted as the first round for European qualification.

The women's tournament of the rugby sevens at the 2022 South American Games was held from 7 to 9 October 2022 at the Estadio Héroes de Curupayty in Luque, Paraguay, a sub-venue outside Asunción. It was the third edition of the rugby sevens women's tournament at the South American Games since its first appearance in Santiago 2014.
The 2023 WXV was the first edition of WXV, a women's international rugby union group tournament for senior national teams organised by World Rugby, and took place between 13 October and 4 November. The competition featured three divisions of six nations each, evenly divided across two pools. Participating teams were determined by regional competitions and play-in matches. Wellington, Dunedin, and Auckland in New Zealand hosted the first-division WXV 1. Stellenbosch and Cape Town in South Africa hosted WXV 2, and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates hosted WXV 3.
