The 53rd International Film Festival Rotterdam, is the 2024 edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, which began on 25 January 2024. The festival opened with Head South a New Zealand film by Jonathan Ogilvie. [1] [2] The complete line-up of films competing in the festival was revealed on 18 December 2023. [3] The festival closed on 4 February 2024 with La Luna by M. Raihan Halim.

Contents

Rei by Tanaka Toshihiko of Japan won the Tiger Award whereas, Kiss Wagon by Midhun Murali from India and Flathead by Jaydon Martin from Australia won the Special Jury Awards. The VPRO Big Screen Award was awarded to The Old Bachelor by Oktay Baraheni from Iran. Green Border by Agnieszka Holland won the Audience Award. [4]

The latter was part of the Cannes ACID programme at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and won the Heart of Sarajevo award for Best Feature Film at the 2019 Sarajevo Film Festival.

The 50th International Film Festival Rotterdam, was the 2021 installment of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, which took place on 1–7 February 2021 and 2–6 June 2021. The first part of the edition focused on the main Tiger, Big Screen, Ammodo Tiger Short, and Limelight programmes. Whilst, the second part focused on the Harbour, Bright Future, Cinema Regained, Classics and Short and Mid-Length Film sections.

The 49th International Film Festival Rotterdam, the 2020 installment of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, took place on 22 January–2 February 2020.

The 51st International Film Festival Rotterdam, is the 2022 edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, which took place online from 26 January 2022 to 6 February 2022. The festival, which was held online for the second consecutive year due to the spread of the Omicron variant across Europe, opened with Amanda Kramer's film Please Baby Please. The festival closed with the screening of 1967 sword fighting classic Dragon Inn by King Hu on 6 February 2022.

Norika Sefa is a Kosovan film director, writer and editor, living in Prague, Czech Republic. Her feature film debut, Looking for Venera (2021), won a special jury award at the 50th International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Jorge Thielen Armand is a film director, screenwriter and producer. He studied communications at Concordia University in Montreal, and later, with Rodrigo Michelangeli, founded the Canadian-Venezuelan film production company La Faena Films. He has directed two feature films, La Soledad and La Fortaleza, and the short film Flor de la Mar. All three films have received positive reviews from critics.

Visakesa Chandrasekaram is a Sri Lankan film director, community law practitioner, human rights lawyer, activist, writer, novelist, dramatist, songwriter, artist, stage performer and academic. He won the Gratiaen Prize for his play titled Forbidden Area (1999). He was well known for his cinematic storytelling through portraying experiences faced by victims and marginalized communities.

<i>Swimming Home</i> (film) United Kingdom film by Justin Anderson

Swimming Home is a 2024 black comedy–drama film directed by Justin Anderson in his directorial debut. Based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Deborah Levy, the film stars Christopher Abbott, Mackenzie Davis and Ariane Labed. The film revolves around Joe and Isabel, whose marriage is dying when Kitti, a naked stranger is found floating in the pool at their holiday villa. It is described as "a surreal and darkly comic journey into the unresolved traumas that lurk in the shadows of all our lives." The film is a co-production between companies based in the United Kingdom and France.

<i>Flathead</i> (film) Australian film

Flathead is a 2024 docu-fiction film directed by Jaydon Martin about working-class Australian life. The film premiered at the 53rd International Film Festival Rotterdam, where it won a Special Jury Award in the Tiger Competition.
