8th Separate Special Operations Regiment or the Special Operations Center "West" ("Prince Izyaslav Mstislavych"), unit number A0553, is a regiment of the Special Operations Forces. It is headquartered in the city of Khmelnytskyi and a part of the Joint Rapid Reaction Forces. Since 2014, the regiment has participated in the many battles of the Russo-Ukrainian War being reformed into a separate special operations center in 2022.
In September 2003, the unit was reformed from a brigade to the 8th separate special purpose regiment (A0553).[1]
Foreign Deployment
Since February 18, 2004, a platoon of the unit was deployed for peacekeeping operations in Wasit Governorate in Iraq, as well as in Sierra Leone, Liberia and other conflict zones.[2][3]
Military training exercises
The regiment participated in multiple large scale military exercises, including the "Adequate response-2011" and "Perspectives-2012".[2]
In 2012, the regiment was described as "the best part of intelligence" of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.[2]
In 2013, athletes of the 8th special purpose regiment won the military applied sports championship of Ukrainian Ground Forces.[4]
In 2013, the regiment also conducted training at the Havryshiv military airfield, near Vinnytsia which included an airborne assault with an An-26, capturing command posts amongst other objectives.[5]
On February 15, 2014, a meeting of the leadership of the military intelligence of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was held at the 8th regiment's base.[6]
War in Donbass
The regiment participated in multiple combat operations during the War in Donbass
In June 2014, the 8th regiment took part in a battle against the pro Russian separatists near the city of Shchastya in Luhansk Oblast suffering multiple wounded.[7][8]
The 8th Regiment was involved in the rescue operation of an An-26 shot down by separatists over the territory occupied by them. Four crew members were rescued while two were captured by separatists.[9]
The regiment was also involved in clearance operations in more than 18 administrative buildings of the city of Kramatorsk.[10]
On June 17, 2014, during the battle of Metalist, personnel from the 8th special forces regiment were sent as reinforcement for the Aydar battalion, five special forces were wounded by separatist APC and RPG and one of the personnel Yevgeny Zelenskyi, died on June 24 from his wounds.[11]
On July 9, 2014, a KAMAZ vehicle of the regiment with 8 personnel was ambushed near the village of Muratove killing one soldier (Savanchuk Victor Yuriyovych) and wounding three others.[12]
On July 20, 2014, the regiment under the command of Major Oleksandr Petrakivskyi took part in the Battle of Luhansk Airport, securing the passage of Ukrainian military to the airport, Major Oleksandr was wounded in action.[13] Regiment personnel moved in two strike forces, one reached first and provided cover to the second, numbering 14 people[14] under the leadership of Petrakivskyi continued to advance. After a reconnaissance mission, they decided to strike deep into separatist territory, after advancing a few hundred metres, they were attacked by Rocket Propelled Grenades but they missed, the regiment personnel continued to advance facing stiff resistance from the separatists and retaliated inflicting losses on the separatists.[15] Several of the regiment's personnel were wounded including the gunner who was wounded severely. The regiment's convoy had to be stopped and take up defense but their position was shelled by mortar, injuring a large number of soldiers including Oleksandr Petrakivskyi who was wounded in the head.[13][15] The battle lasted 5 hours, ending with the evacuation of the personnel on APCs. Two personnel of the regiment Pavlo Ilchuk and Andrii Vasylyshyn were killed in action.[15]

On August 26, 2014, the regiment participated in the Battle of Ilovaisk, the city was penetrated by separatists. An Armored Personnel Carrier carrying the regiment personnel came under artillery fire leading to the death of a soldier of the regiment (Oleksandr Valeriyovych).[16] Another soldier (Andriyuk Yevhen Oleksandrovych) died in the same battle on an unknown date.[17]
On February 14, during the Battle of Debaltseve, units of the regiment and 73rd Naval Special Operations Regiment guarded the section of the Debaltseve-Artemivsk highway in the Luhansk Oblast for the safe withdrawal of Ukrainian troops.[22]
The regiment participated in the Battle of Shchastia and on July 7, 2015, a KAMAZ of the regiment was ambushed by separatists who attacked using machine guns and grenade launchers leading to the death of one soldier (Volodymyr Serhiyovych Brozhko) of the regiment and wounding of three others.[23]
In September 2015, the regiment conducted mine clearance operations in the village of Krymske, Novoaidar Raion while simultaneously engaging the separatists in a battle, a soldier of the regiment (Oleksandr Oleksandrovych Mandybura) was killed and two were wounded in a landmine explosion.[24]
On July 23, 2016, the unit took part in a battle with separatists near the village of Novozvanivka, Popasna Raion. They discovered advancing militants and attacked them killing two and wounding eight separatists. The soldiers captured a huge cache of weapons, mines, and ammunition belonging to the separatists. To stop Ukrainians from taking the captured weaponry, the separatists started attacking using 82 mm Mortars and 160 mm Mortar M1943, AGS-17, SPG-9, an anti-aircraft gun, a 122-mm self-propelled gun, and later also a tank killing a soldier (Serhiy Shadskikh) and wounding four others.
Then about 20 separatists attacked the Ukrainian positions but were repulsed after having two separatists killed and five wounded. The Ukrainians temporarily retreated and then came back, to prevent further attack they carried out an operation during which a soldier (Roman Mykhailovych Matviets) died and three were wounded, meanwhile five more separatists were also killed.[26][27]
2017
On June 24, 2017, the regiment was involved in a combat operation in the village of Sokilnyky, Novoaidar Raion and while returning they came across a minefield killing two soldiers of the regiment (Ishchuk Oleksii Vasyliovych and Vasyl Mykhailovych Lavrys).[28][29][30]
The regiment participated in the Battle of Slavyansk (2019) and on July 18, 2019, he died during an engagement with the militants a soldier of the regiment (Bogdan Dmytrovych Bigus) was killed and another was seriously wounded.[31]
2019
On September 10, 2019, a group of the regiment was ambushed while returning from a combat mission in the Luhansk Oblast killing a soldier of the regiment (Maksym Volodymyrovych Kondratyuk).[32]
2021
On December 6, 2021, at the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, fifteen Humvees were transferred to the unit as a part of an arms package from the United States.[33]
On April 13, 2022, while operating in the Joint Forces Operation territory, the regiment engaged with the Russians, the engagement led to the death of one soldier of the regiment (Maksym Volodymyrovych Kondratyuk).[35]
2023
The regiment participated in the Battle of Bakhmut and on July 14, 2023, a soldier of the regiment (Tegza Anatoly Yaroslavovych) was killed outside Bakhmut[36] during an assault on enemy positions while saving others of the regiment and another brigade from snipers.[37][38]
On June 21, 2023, another soldier of the regiment (Artem Oleksandrovich Sokolovskyi) was killed in combat in the village of Vasylkivka near Bakhmut.[39]
The regiment was involved in combat operations in the village of Verbove, Zaporizhzhia Oblast as a part of the 2023 Ukrainian Counteroffensive and a soldier of the unit (Atamanyuk Anton Mykhailovych) was killed in action on 15 October 2023.[40]
2024
On 16 August 2024, during the August 2024 Kursk Oblast incursion, the regiment published a video in which they ambushed a Russian truck, purportedly killing a dozen soldiers "in a few minutes".[41]
Structure
It is classified amongst the most combat ready regiments of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and is composed of the following subunits.[42]
The Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, also known in English as the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU), is the military intelligence service of the Ukrainian government. It is an agency of the Ministry of Defence, not the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The 80th Separate Galician Air Assault Brigade ; Military Unit Number A0284) is an airmobile formation of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces. The brigade traces its history back to the 80th Airborne Regiment of the Soviet Union, formed in 1955 as part of the Soviet airborne's 7th Guards Airborne Division. Four years later, the regiment transferred to the 104th Guards Airborne Division. It participated in Operation Whirlwind in 1956 and Operation Danube in 1968. In 1979, the regiment was disbanded and used to form the 39th and 40th Separate Air Assault Brigades of the Soviet Army. The 39th Separate Air Assault Brigade became the 224th Training Center after transfer back to the Soviet airborne in 1990. The training center was taken over by Ukraine in 1992 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and became the 6th Separate Airmobile Brigade in 1995. In 1999, the brigade was reorganized into the 80th Airmobile Regiment, part of the 13th Army Corps. In 2013, the regiment was upgraded and became a brigade. The brigade fought in the War in Donbass, and was redesignated as an air assault brigade in 2015.
The 300th Guards Mechanized Regiment was a formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. The full name of the regiment is the 300th Separate Guards Mechanized Budapest Regiment.
The 2nd Battalion of Special Assignment "Donbas" is a unit of the National Guard of Ukraine subordinated to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and formerly based in Severodonetsk. Originally created in 2014 as a volunteer unit called the Donbas Battalion by Semen Semenchenko following the Russian occupation of Crimea and possible invasion of continental Ukraine. The formation of the unit started in the spring of 2014 during the 2014 pro-Russian unrest in Ukraine. The unit was initially formed as an independent force, but has been since fully integrated into the National Guard as the 2nd Special Purpose Battalion "Donbas" within the 15th Regiment of the National Guard.
Ukraine inherited its special forces (Spetsnaz) units from the remnants of the Soviet armed forces, GRU and KGB units. Ukraine now maintains its own Spetsnaz structure under the control of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and under the Ministry of Defence, while the Security Service of Ukraine maintains its own Spetsnaz force, the Alpha group. In 2016 the Special Operations Forces were created as an independent branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine formed only by special forces units.

The Presidential Brigade "Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi" is a special military unit of Ukraine and its Armed Forces which is mandated to defend the president of Ukraine in his duty as Supreme Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, the First Family, and the presidential residences and facilities assigned to the presidential office.

Separate Special Operations Center "East" "Prince Svyatoslav Khorobroy" is a formation of special forces as part of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It was subordinate to the 4th Special Intelligence Service of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. The unit is quartered in Kropyvnytskyi. It is part of the United Rapid Response Forces.
The First Company of the Special-Purpose Kyiv Regiment, formerly known as the Kyiv-1 Battalion is a battalion of the National Police of Ukraine's Special Police Forces.
The 8th Special Purpose Regiment "Jaguar" is a formation of the Internal Troops of Ukraine, which existed from 1994 to 2014 and was stationed in the city of Kalynivka. Since 2014, the regiment belonged to the Western Territorial Command of the National Guard of Ukraine. The commander of the special unit is Colonel Ivan Myropolskyi.
503rd Marine Bataillon is a bataillon of the 38th Marine Brigade. It was established in late 2015 as a part of the Ukrainian Navy's 36th Marine Brigade as the 701st Marine Battalion but was transferred to the Ukrainian Marine Corps in 2018. It became a part of the 38th Marine Brigade in February 2023 which was established on the basis of the battalion. It is garrisoned at Mariupol.
Andriy Oleksandrovych Malakhov is a Ukrainian soldier, captain of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a participant of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
The 6th Separate Special Purpose Regiment "Ranger" is a Ukrainian special forces regiment that was formed in 2024 as part of the Ukrainian Ranger Corps.
The 12th Brigade of Operational Assignment was a military formation of the National Guard of Ukraine. It was part of the Eastern operational territorial association. It was based in Mariupol, Donetsk Oblast.
73rd Naval Special Operations Center "Chieftain Antin Holovaty" or the Special Operations Center South is the naval component of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces. It joined the Ukrainian Navy on 1992 and became a part of Special Operations Forces in 2016, becoming the sole naval component of SOF. It is headquartered at Ochakiv.
140th Separate Special Operations Regiment is a NATO certified regiment of the Ukrainian SOF. It is one of the most covert and secretive units within the Ukrainian SOF. It was established in 2007 and operates as an all officer regiment participating in covert operations. In 2009, it became a part of NATO Response Force.
801st Special Marine Detachment is an elite unit of the Ukrainian Navy and is concerned with underwater special operations as well as combat reconnaissance operations. It is currently based at Odessa and has taken part in multiple engagements during the Russo-Ukrainian War.
14th Separate Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Regiment is a Regiment of the Unmanned Systems Forces, which was originally established in 2023 as a separate regiment of the Ukrainian Ground Forces and has seen combat during the Russian Invasion of Ukraine including combat operations on Russian territory.
90th Airmobile Battalion "Senior Lieutenant Ivan Zubkov" is a battalion of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces and is subordinated to the 81st Airmobile Brigade. It was established in 2014 on the basis of 95th Air Assault Brigade. It has seen combat in multiple battles during the War in Donbass and Russian invasion of Ukraine. It's also called the battalion of Cyborgs for it's heroic defense of the Donetsk Airport. It is made up exclusively of volunteers.
