A. Sarkunam (born 23 April 1975) is an Indian film director, working in the Tamil cinema. He worked as an associate with director A. L. Vijay. [2]

Career

Sarkunam made his directorial debut with the romantic comedy Kalavani (2009). Featuring Vimal and Oviya in the lead roles, the film released to positive critical response and went on to become a sleeper hit. [3] [4] His next film was the period piece Vaagai Sooda Vaa (2011) again starring Vimal which also received positive reviews. The film earned the prestigious National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil. [5] [6] Sarkunam said that Vaagai Sooda Vaa was his first script and dream project. [7] He then made a romantic comedy film titled Naiyaandi [8] with Dhanush and Nazriya Nazim in the lead. [9] [10]

In 2014, he started new production company "A Sarkunam Cinemaz" and introduced his brother A. Nandha Kumar as a producer. Their first production was Manjapai , which marked the directorial debut of Sarkunam's former assistant N. Raghavan. [11] His fourth film Chandi Veeran , produced by Bala and starring Atharvaa and Anandhi was released in 2015. This film also got good reviews and it had many similarities with his first film, Kalavani . [12] [13]

Kalavani (transl. Thief) is a 2010 Indian Tamil-language romantic comedy film written and directed by newcomer A. Sarkunam. It stars Vimal and debutante Oviya, with Saranya Ponvannan, Ilavarasu, Ganja Karuppu, and Soori in supporting roles. The music was composed by S. S. Kumaran with cinematography by Om Prakash and editing by Raja Mohammad. The film was made on a shoe-string budget, and released on 25 June 2010. It became a sleeper hit of 2010 and later, the movie was remade in Kannada as Kirataka with Oviya reprising her role.

Vaagai Sooda Vaa is a 2011 Tamil-language period drama film directed by A. Sarkunam, making it his second film after Kalavani (2010). It stars Vimal and Ineya, with Bhagyaraj, Ponvannan and Thambi Ramaiah playing supporting roles. The film is a period piece set in the 1960s in a remote village in Tamil Nadu. The film released on 30 September 2011 to mostly positive reviews but become an average grosser. The film was subsequently honored with the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil for 2012.

The film is an unofficial remake of the 1993 Malayalam film Meleparambil Anveedu and its 1995 Tamil remake Valli Vara Pora. It received mixed to negative reviews and became a box office bomb.

This is Vimal's 25th film. A sequel to Kalavani (2010), the film began production in February 2018. The film was released on 5 July 2019 to negative reviews.

<i>Aadukalam</i> (soundtrack) 2010 soundtrack album by G. V. Prakash Kumar

Aadukalam (transl. Playground) is the soundtrack album for the Tamil film of the same name directed by Vetrimaaran. The film featured music composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar in his second collaboration with Vetrimaaran and Dhanush after Polladhavan (2007), and its soundtrack album features seven tracks; four songs, two rap numbers and an instrumental. Lyrics for the songs were written by Snehan, Ekadesi, Yugabharathi, V. I. S. Jayapalan and Yogi B. The album distributed by Sony Music India was released on 1 December 2010.

S. Kathiresan is an Indian film producer and film director who has worked on Tamil films. He made his debut production with Polladhavan in 2007 and debuted direction with Rudhran. He owns the production company, Five Star Creations.
