Vemalis an Indian actor known for his appearances in Tamil films. He gained recognition with his credited appearances and supporting role in the critically acclaimed movie Kanchivaram . He later played the lead role in Pandiraj's highly acclaimed film Pasanga in 2009.

Vemal's breakthrough came with the film Kalavani in 2010. He further acted in movies such as Vaagai Sooda Vaa (2011), Kalakalappu (2012), Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga (2013), Manjapai (2014), Mannar Vagaiyara (2018) and Deiva Machan (2023).

Early life

Vimal was born on 25 April 1981, in Pannankombu, a village near Manapparai, Tiruchirappalli district, Tamil Nadu, and later moved to Chennai. He discontinued his studies and began learning dancing and joined the Koothu-P-Pattarai, a theatre group in Chennai. [1]

Vimal married Akshaya and they have three children together. [2]

Acting career

2001–2008

In 2001, he started a career as an aspiring model actor. While being a part of Koothu-P-Pattarai, Vimal was appearing in uncredited roles in several high-profile Tamil films, including Ghilli (2004), Kireedam (2007), and Kuruvi (2008). He made cameo role in the critically acclaimed movie Kanchivaram (2008). [3]

2009–2016

He played his first leading role in Pasanga (2009), directed by Pandiraj, in which he played Meenakshisundaram, an insurance agent. [1] The film won critical acclaim, while his performance was well received. He next appeared in A. Sarkunam's comedy entertainer Kalavani (2010) with Oviya in the female lead which went on to become a sleeper hit. [4] In 2011, he acted in three films, Cloud Nine Movie's Thoonga Nagaram , Eththan and Vaagai Sooda Vaa , which saw him collaborating with A. Sarkunam again. Vaagai Sooda Vaa was a period piece set in the 1960s, with Vimal playing a village teacher named Veluthambi. [5] His other 2012 film, was Mattuthavani which was long-delayed and was a flop at the box office. [6] He was then seen in UTV's comedy film Kalakalappu under Sundar C's direction that features an ensemble cast. [7] His next release was Ishtam , a remake of Telugu hit Yemaindhi Ee Vela, in which he played an urban character for the first time. [8]

In 2013, he acted five movies as Sillunu Oru Sandhippu , a simple love story, [9] Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga co-starring with Sivakarthikeyan directed by Pandiraj. The film was a good opening and was a hit at the box office. [10] [11] Moondru Per Moondru Kadal with actors Arjun Sarja and Cheran directed by Vasanth. Ezhil's direction Desingu Raja was released on 23 August. [12] Jannal Oram co-starring with R. Parthiepan and Vidharth. The film received mixed reviews from critics and audience. [13] Vimal is currently working on more than half-a-dozen projects. He has play in Pulivaal (2014), a comedy thriller with actor Prasanna, remake of Malayalam film. [14] He has completed Manjapai (2014) [15] and Padmamagan's Netru Indru (2014). He was next seen an action film, Kaaval (2015), [16] followed by two comedy dramas, Anjala (2016) [17] and Mapla Singam (2016). [18]

2018–present

In 2018, Boopathy Pandian's Mannar Vagaiyara . The film is produced by Vimal for the first time. It was running successful and was declared a super hit. [19] In December, an adult comedy film, Evanukku Engeyo Matcham Irukku . It was a poor review from critics and audiences. [20] His next two films were romantic comedies including Kalavani 2 (2019), a sequel to Kalavani and Kanni Raasi (2020). [21] [22]

Vimal was seen in the Zee5 crime thriller web series Vilangu (2022). The series, written and directed by Prashanth Pandiyaraj, started streaming in February and received extremely positive reviews. [23] He was acted as surprise cameo in Vijay Sethupathi starrer DSP (2022) directed by Ponram. [24] In 2023, he returns to the family territory in rural comedy, Deiva Machan . [25] His next projects were action films such as Kulasami and Thudikkum Karangal . [26] [27] In 2024, the film Pogumidam Vegu Thooramillai in which Vimal is seen playing a morgue driver, whose job is to deliver a dead body to a family. [28] Follow-up to the Bose Venkat's-directed action-drama film Sir , which explores themes of social inequality and the importance of education. [29]

Kalavani (transl. Thief) is a 2010 Indian Tamil-language romantic comedy film written and directed by newcomer A. Sarkunam. It stars Vimal and debutante Oviya, with Saranya Ponvannan, Ilavarasu, Ganja Karuppu, and Soori in supporting roles. The music was composed by S. S. Kumaran with cinematography by Om Prakash and editing by Raja Mohammad. The film was made on a shoe-string budget, and released on 25 June 2010. It became a sleeper hit of 2010 and later, the movie was remade in Kannada as Kirataka with Oviya reprising her role.

Vaagai Sooda Vaa is a 2011 Tamil-language period drama film directed by A. Sarkunam, making it his second film after Kalavani (2010). It stars Vimal and Ineya, with Bhagyaraj, Ponvannan and Thambi Ramaiah playing supporting roles. The film is a period piece set in the 1960s in a remote village in Tamil Nadu. The film released on 30 September 2011 to mostly positive reviews but become an average grosser. The film was subsequently honored with the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil for 2012.

Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga is a 2013 Tamil-language political comedy drama film written, directed and co-produced by Pandiraj. It features Vimal and Sivakarthikeyan in lead roles, alongside Bindu Madhavi and Regina Cassandra. Yuvan Shankar Raja composed the soundtrack. The film released on 29 March 2013 and received positive responses from critics as well as audiences. It ran for 100 days in many theatres in Tamil Nadu and was commercially successful. The film was remade in Kannada as Katte.

<i>Jannal Oram</i> 2013 Indian film

Jannal Oram is a 2013 Tamil-language road comedy thriller film directed by Karu Pazhaniappan A remake of the 2012 Malayalam film, Ordinary, it stars Parthiban, Vimal, Vidharth, Ramana, Poorna and Manisha Yadav of Vazhakku Enn 18/9 fame. The music was composed by Vidyasagar with cinematography by Arbhindu Saaraa and editing by Saravana. The story is set in Pannaikadu, a hillside village, with only one bus service to and from a nearby town, Palani. The film released on 29 November 2013 to mixed reviews.

Desingu Raja is a 2013 Indian Tamil-language comedy film directed by Ezhil, and produced by P. Madan under the banner Escape Artists Motion Pictures. Starring Vimal and Bindu Madhavi, it also features Soori, Singampuli and Ravi Mariya, playing supporting roles. The film is set in two villages which are perpetually at conflict with one another.

<i>Pasanga 2</i> 2015 Indian film

Pasanga 2 : Haiku is a 2015 Indian Tamil-language children's film written, co produced and directed by Pandiraj. A thematic sequel to Pasanga (2009), the film focuses on the issue of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) amongst children and is set in the city, unlike Pasanga. The film, starring debutante child actors Nishesh and Vaishnavi in lead alongside Ramdoss, Vidya Pradeep, Karthik Kumar and Bindu Madhavi. This film is produced by Suriya, who also appears in a supporting character along with Amala Paul. The film will mark Pandiraj's last of the trilogy for children, following Pasanga and Marina.

Mannar Vagaiyara is a 2018 Indian Tamil-language action comedy film written and directed by G. Boopathy Pandian. The film is produced by actor Vimal, who also stars alongside Anandhi, while Prabhu, Saranya Ponvannan, Chandini Tamilarasan and Karthik Kumar among others appear in supporting roles. Featuring music composed by Jakes Bejoy and cinematography by P. G. Muthiah and Sooraj Nallusami, the film was released on 26 January 2018 and become a decent hit by completing 100 days of theatrical run.
