Archbishop Kavukatt Jubilee Memorial School or AKJM Public School was founded by the Society of Jesus in Kanjirappally, Kerala, Kottayam District, India. [1] It provides elementary through higher secondary education and is not government aided. [2] It follows the principles of Jesuit pedagogy. [3]

History

AKJM was established by the Society of Jesus in 1961 in St. Dominic’s Parish, Kanjirapally. It has English as the medium of instruction and was named after Mar Matthew Kavukatt, Archbishop of Changanacherry in his sacerdotal jubilee year. [4] It moved to its present site in 1963, serving primarily Catholic boys. A decade later a boarding house was opened. primarily for boys from the Kuttanad and High Range areas.

In 1995, with the increased population around the school, the boarding house was closed and AKJM Junior HIgh was opened. In 2002 higher secondary was added for biology and science with maths. Also in 2002 the school began admitting girls. [5] It has an active alumni association. [6]

AKJM School, a Jesuit institution, draws its inspiration from Jesus Christ and envisions forming the whole person into men and women for others. [4] As an educational institution, it strives to provide an environment and training context for the students to prepare themselves for active and responsible life commitment for the formation of a just and caring social order. Activities

Sponsored sports include basketball, volleyball, lawn tennis, badminton, football, hockey, cricket, taekwondo, and yoga, while facilities also include a horse riding ring and shooting range. [7] Activities include music, instrumental music, painting, literary club, and table tennis. [8]

In 1960, Fr. Joseph Edamaram, S.J., the first Provincial of the Jesuits in the independent Kerala province, helped found Loyola School and the adjacent Loyola College of Social Sciences in Trivandrum. In June 1961, Loyola School was established at Palayam, with Fr. K.V. John S.J. as the first Principal and 36 students on the rolls. In 1962, the school was temporarily shifted to a campus in Monvila, followed by the establishment of a boarding house. Fr. P.C. Anthony, S.J. followed Fr. K.V. John S.J. as the Principal of the school.

The importance and antiquity of education in Kerala is underscored by the state's ranking as among the most literate in the country. The educational transformation of Kerala was triggered by efforts of the Church Mission Society missionaries, who were the pioneers that promoted mass education in Kerala, in the early decades of the 19th century. The local dynastic precursors of modern-day Kerala—primarily the Travancore Royal Family, the Nair Service Society, Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam and Muslim Educational Society (MES)—also made significant contributions to the progress on education in Kerala. Sree Narayana Polytechnic College (Malayalam: ശ്രീ നാരായണ പോളിടെക് നിക്ക് is located in Kottiyam near Kollam, Kerala in south India. Thomas Kallampally was a notable politician and educationist from Kanjirappally, Kerala. He was born in Kanjirappally. He started Netaji Vayanasaala a library for the youth at Anakkal, Kanjirappally at the age of 18. He was elected as the State General Secretary of Kerala Students Congress, the students wing of Kerala Congress while doing his Law Degree at Government Law College, Ernakulam. He also served as the PTA president of St Antony's Public school from its inception till his demise. Kallampally was also a member of Center for Human Resourced Development of State of Kerala and Kerala State Pollution Control Board. He was also a lead campaign manager for the Kerala Congress for various Lok Sabha elections. Kallampally holds the record of the second youngest MLA in the history of Kerala Legislative Assembly having elected to the Assembly at the age of 26.

Thomas V. Kunnunkal is an Indian Jesuit priest, educationist and writer. He is a former chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), a former director of the Indian Social Institute, New Delhi (2008-2009), and the President of the Islamic Studies Association, a non-governmental organization promoting religious harmony. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974.
