AZAL Arena is a football stadium in Shuvelan settlement of Baku, Azerbaijan. It was the home stadium of Shuvalan FK. The stadium holds 3,500 people and opened in 2011.

Background

The first game ever played at AZAL Arena was AZAL PFC - FK Baku (1:0), April 10, 2011. Belarusian striker Gennady Bliznyuk scored a first goal at the stadium. [1]

On 17 February 2011, UEFA approved this stadium to be used for international football matches and gave 2 stars for stadium category. [2] [3]

Future

The club plans to construct another tribune and increase the capacity to 6000 in the coming years.

Events

The stadium was used as a training ground during 2012 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. [4]

The 2011–12 Azerbaijan Premier League was the twentieth season of the Premier League since its establishment in 1992. Neftchi Baku was the defending champions, having won their second Azerbaijani championship the previous season.

The Baku 2012–13 season is Baku's fifteenth Azerbaijan Premier League season. This is Baku's first season under Božidar Bandović, who replaced Novruz Azimov after the UEFA Europa League qualifiers where they were beaten 2–0 on aggregate by Mura 05 of Slovenia. Baku will also participate in the 2012–13 Azerbaijan Cup.

The 2010-11 FK Baku season was the club's thirteenth season in the Azerbaijan Premier League. They started the season under German manager Winfried Schäfer, however he was sacked and replaced by Latvian Aleksandrs Starkovs in January 2011. FK Baku finished the season in sixth place. They also took part in the 2010–11 Azerbaijan Cup, getting knocked out by Khazar Lankaran in the semi-final stage. Baku entered the 2010–11 UEFA Europa League at the First Qualifying Round stage, and got knocked out in this round by Budućnost Podgorica, from Montenegro, after fielding a suspended player in the first leg in which Budućnost Podgorica were awarded a 3–0 win after the original match had ended in a 2–1 win for Baku.

The Qarabağ 2010-11 season was Qarabağ's eighteenth Azerbaijan Premier League season, and their third season under Gurban Gurbanov. They finished the season in 3rd place, and were knocked out of the 2010–11 Azerbaijan Cup at the Last 16 stage by Turan Tovuz. They also participated in the 2010–11 UEFA Europa League, entering at the First Qualifying Round stage. They beat Metalurg Skopje of Macedonia, before beating Portadown of Northern Ireland in the Second Qualifying Round. Next they beat Wisła Kraków of Poland in the Second Qualifying Round to make them the first Azerbaijani team to reach the Play-off Round of the Europa League. In this round they were defeated by Borussia Dortmund of Germany 5-0 on aggregate.

The Baku 2013-14 season was Baku's sixteenth Azerbaijan Premier League season. They competed in the 2013–14 Azerbaijan Premier League, finishing 5th, and reached the Quarterfinals of the 2013–14 Azerbaijan Cup where they were defeated by Ravan Baku. It was Milinko Pantićs first season as manager, having replaced Božidar Bandović on 14 June after Bandović left his position at the end of the 2012-13 season.

The Simurq PFC 2011–12 season was Simurq PFC's sixth Azerbaijan Premier League season. They started the season under the management of Sergei Yuran, before his contract was mutually terminated on 5 March. Igor Getman was appointed as the club's caretaker manager from the 5th to 11 March, when Giorgi Chikhradze was then appointed as their permanent manager. They finished the season in 9th position and were knocked out of the Azerbaijan Cup at the first round stage by vs Neftchi Baku.

The Qarabağ 2014-15 season was Qarabağ's 23rd Azerbaijan Premier League season and their seventh season under manager Gurban Gurbanov. They completed a domestic double by defending their Premier League title and winning the Azerbaijan Cup. In Europe, Qarabağ were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the 3rd qualifying round by Red Bull Salzburg, resulting in them going into the Play-off round for the UEFA Europa League. In the Europa League, Qarabağ reached the Group Stages for the first time, where they finished third, behind Internazionale and Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, and ahead of Saint-Étienne.

The Sumgayit 2014-15 season is Sumgayit's fourth Azerbaijan Premier League season. They will also participate in the Azerbaijan Cup and it is their first season with Ilham Yadullayev as their manager.

The 2015–16 season was Gabala FK's 11th season, and their 10th in the Azerbaijan Premier League, the top-flight of Azerbaijani football. Domestically, Gabala finished 3rd in the Premier League for the third season in a row and reached the Semifinals of the Azerbaijan Cup where they were defeated by Neftchi Baku. In Europe Gabala reached the Group Stages of the UEFA Europa League where they faced PAOK, Krasnodar and Borussia Dortmund before finishing bottom of the group.

The Qarabağ 2015–16 season is Qarabağ's 24th Azerbaijan Premier League season, of which they are defending champions, and will be their eighth season under manager Gurban Gurbanov. They will participate in the League, the Azerbaijan Cup and the UEFA Champions League, entering at the Second qualifying round.

The Khazar Lankaran 2015-16 season is Khazar Lankaran's twelfth Azerbaijan Premier League season, and their first season under manager Elbrus Mammadov. They will compete in the Azerbaijan Cup and the League.

The Zira FK 2015–16 season is Zira's first Azerbaijan Premier League season, and second season in their history. It is their first season with Adil Shukurov as manager, during which they participate in the Azerbaijan Cup as well as the League.

The 2016–17 season is Gabala FK's 12th season, and their 11th in the Azerbaijan Premier League, the top-flight of Azerbaijani football. As well as participating in the Premier League, Gabala will take part in the Azerbaijan Cup and UEFA Europa League.

The Qarabağ 2016-17 season is Qarabağ's 25th Azerbaijan Premier League season, of which they are defending champions, and will be their ninth season under manager Gurban Gurbanov. They won the League for the fourth season in a row on 16 April 2017, reaching the final of the Azerbaijan Cup and the group stages of the UEFA Europa League having been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League in the 3rd qualifying round by Viktoria Plzeň on away goals.

The AZAL PFK 2016–17 season was AZAL's twelfth Azerbaijan Premier League season, and thirteenth season in their history. It was their third full season with Tarlan Ahmadov as manager, during which they finished bottom of the league, with just 10 points, and were knocked out of the Azerbaijan Cup by Gabala at the Quarterfinal stage.
