A Factory Sample is a 7-inch double sampler EP released in January 1979 by Factory Records of Manchester,England. Funded by a small inheritance which had recently been bequeathed to Tony Wilson, [2] it was the first vinyl recording to be released by the label,assigned the catalogue number FAC-2 (FAC 1 was a concert at The Factory). The cover of the EP is made of rice paper,dyed silver and sealed inside a thin plastic bag.
The Joy Division tracks were later re-released on the band's 1988 compilation album Substance .
The Cabaret Voltaire tracks were later re-released on the 1990 double disc rarities compilation Listen Up with Cabaret Voltaire. [3]

He often used the bass as a lead instrument,playing melodies on the high strings with a signature heavy chorus effect. Unknown Pleasures is the debut studio album by the English rock band Joy Division. It was released on 15 June 1979 through Factory Records. The album was recorded and mixed over three successive weekends at Stockport's Strawberry Studios in April 1979,with producer Martin Hannett contributing a number of unconventional recording techniques to the group's sound. The cover artwork was designed by artist Peter Saville,using a data plot of signals from a radio pulsar. It is the only Joy Division album released during lead singer Ian Curtis's lifetime.

It is the companion to a similar singles compilation by their subsequent band New Order,also titled Substance. These songs mark the group's third John Peel session. Tracks 6 to 9 were recorded for the BBC Radio 1 Evening Session in 2001. "Transmission" is a video recorded in 2002 for John Peel's 40th anniversary party.
