Recording session took place at Graffiti Tunez in West Oakland, at Buck Fifty Records, at Bay View Productions, at Sucka Free City and at JT's in the Mo. Production was handled by Ant Banks, Black C of RBL Posse, Cyrus Esteban, Gigolo G, J-Mack, JT the Bigga Figga, Lil' Fly, T.C., and Franky J, who also served as executive producer. The album features guest appearances from fellow San Francisco-based rappers JT the Bigga Figga, Lil' Fly and Seff tha Gaffla.

Two singles also made it to the charts, "Hey DJ" peaked at #43 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #18 on the Hot Rap Singles, while "If You Wanna Groove" featuring Aulsondro "Novelist" Hamilton peaked at #45 on the Hot Rap Singles. This was A Lighter Shade of Brown's last album to make it to the charts.

Production was handled by One Dope Mexican, Julio G, Tony G and DTTX. It features guest appearances from A.L.T., Jay Tee, Kid Frost and Steve Wilcox.
"Hey! DJ" is a song by The World's Famous Supreme Team. Writing is credited to Larry Price & Ronald Larkins Jr. and it was produced by Stephen Hague. Released on 12" in 1984 on Island Records, there were three mixes included. The song refers with small lyric parts to McLaren & Supreme Team's previous hit, "Buffalo Gals", which the group featured on. "Hey DJ" peaked at number fifteen on the US soul chart.

D.B.A. was another newly formed West Coast supergroup composed of Bosko, Cool Nutz and Poppa L.Q.

The song both sampled the music and retained the original chorus of The Spinners' song of the same name, though Rappin' 4-Tay replaced the song's original lyrics with his own. The Spinners were credited as featured artists and songwriters Thom Bell and Phil Hurtt were both given writing credits.

In the US, it was released as a single, where it peaked at number 17 on the Best Selling Rhythm and Blues chart and number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100.
