A Song Is Way Above the Lawn is the second solo album by Karen Peris, lead vocalist and songwriter of American alternative rock band the Innocence Mission. The album was released worldwide on October 8, 2021, via Bella Union.
The album was written over a period of seven years, [1] and is her first solo album since 2012's Violet. [2] Peris described A Song Is Way Above the Lawn as "an illustrated album, for kids or for anyone who might like songs about walking under trees in a city, seeing dogs from a car window, reading, encountering gentle lions in the public library, listening to the first sounds of the morning, looking at stars, thinking about giraffes, and elephants, and the beauty of the world, the possibility contained in a tiny moment of a day." [3]
The lyrics to "I Would Sing Along" are inspired by an interview Peris heard on NPR regarding the Elephant Listening Project, and their acoustic biologists who study the sub-sonic singing of African elephants. [1] In the song, Peris sings: "In the low light, in the lowest notes/ I hear him singing sweetly" and "An elephant sings someone to sleep/ And I would sing with him." [4] A writer for NPR complimented the song's production, saying the track "nestles into the corners of beauty, articulating images and ideas just out of view" before saying: "But then drums, upright bass and strings sweep the rhythm to a windy bluster, in a heart-swelling full-band arrangement that hasn't been heard on an Innocence Mission album in quite some time." The album contains musical contributions from Peris's husband Don, [2] as well as their two children, Drew and Anna. [3] Elaborating on the album's content, Peris said:
I like that it's possible to re-travel some of the wide open expanse of childhood imagination and wonder. The thing is, I don't really feel that far away from those places even now, and I'm sure that's a universal thought. The moments I'm telling about in the songs, and the wonder and the curiosity – I still feel so much of it, just as anyone does. I didn't want to be an adult saying to a child, 'This is how you feel'. It's more like saying, just as a person talking with another person, 'Isn't this how we all feel', and isn't that a mystery of life, too, that we are all so connected? So, most of the songs are written in the first person.
"I Would Sing Along" was the first song released from the album. [4] Its music video premiered on YouTube on July 19, 2021, and features hand-drawn animation created by Peris. [1] The album was released worldwide on October 8 via Bella Union on CD, LP and digital download. [5] [6] LP editions of the record were pressed on green vinyl. The album received positive reviews upon release. AllMusic compared it to Now the Day Is Over , the Innocence Mission's 2004 studio record, saying the album "speaks to listeners of all ages, as it rarely if ever condescends while delving into relatable topics". Their writer went on to compliment the "deceptively efficient arrangements" before summarizing: "Almost like an antidote to programmed, singalong kidz pop, A Song Is Way Above the Lawn feels restorative and may even leave some misty-eyed." [9] Brooklyn Vegan dubbed it the album of the week and complimented its lyricism, saying the lyrics are "full of wonder and small details, and are often about those details." They summarized by advising listeners to not be "put off by the 'kids' angle", saying the songs have "a childlike air but are imbued with such poetic grace that there is zero pandering, zero patronizing. Add to that the way Karen writes melodies, the way she plays the piano, and her gorgeous, fragile voice, and all the songs have a complex, satisfying happy-sad air to them. Even the ones about giraffes and elephants." [11] Mojo also gave the album a positive review, complimenting the lyricism and musical performances and saying: "What could be a twee exploration of wonder is instead an intense reverie." [10] Spectrum Culture said the album "feels like a gift to be cherished for years to come. Short and sweet – not even reaching the half hour mark – A Song Is Way Above the Lawn is beautiful, heartwarming and a joy to experience." [12]

Jeffrey Nye Mangum is an American singer, songwriter, and musician who gained prominence as the founder, songwriter, vocalist and guitarist of Neutral Milk Hotel, as well for his co-founding of The Elephant 6 Recording Company. Mangum is characterized for his complex, lyrically dense songwriting, exemplified on the critically lauded album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, as well as for his public image as a recluse associated with his extended periods of musical inactivity and minimal press interaction. An article published in Slate described Mangum as the "Salinger of Indie Rock." In 2023, Jeff Mangum received a Grammy award nomination for "Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package".
The Innocence Mission is an American indie folk band formed in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1986. The band's current members are Karen Peris, her husband Don Peris, and Mike Bitts. Although all members have contributed to the composition of the band's music, Karen Peris is the main writer.

"This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us" is a song by American pop band Sparks. Written by Ron Mael, it is the opening track on their third studio album Kimono My House (1974), and was the lead single from the album. Although it did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100, "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us" achieved major success in Europe, peaking within the top ten of the charts in the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. In the latter country, the song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, where it remained for two consecutive weeks. Birds of My Neighborhood is the fourth studio album by the Innocence Mission. Released in 1999 on Kneeling Elephant, a sub-label of RCA, the album was out of print until Badman Recording acquired the license to remaster and reissue it in 2006.
Glow is the third album by the American folk rock band the Innocence Mission, released in 1995 on A&M Records. Musically, it marked a radical departure for the group, as the Sundays/10,000 Maniacs-inspired dream pop aesthetic found on their first two albums was replaced by a more straightforward, cleaner rock sound. The album was recorded over a several-month period at Kingsway Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana and Bad Animals Studios, Seattle, Washington. It was the band's final major label release.

Small Planes was issued on vinyl for the first time on November 3, 2021. The vinyl featured an alternate track listing and the song "A Thousand Miles", which had been excluded from the original release.
Now the Day Is Over is the seventh studio album by American alternative rock band The Innocence Mission, released by Badman Recording Co. on November 9, 2004. A collection of standards, traditional and classical works performed as lullabies, the album was recorded in August 2004 in the band's home studio. A portion of proceeds from sales of the album are donated to charitable organisations, including Catholic Relief Services.
We Walked in Song is the eighth studio album by the Innocence Mission. It was released in North America on March 13, 2007 by Badman Recording Co., with a vinyl edition containing the bonus track "Shooting Star (Sketch)" following a week later on March 20. All international versions of the album include the bonus track.
Street Map is an EP of new studio recordings from the Innocence Mission. Limited to 5,000 copies, the release is their first since 2000's Christ Is My Hope to be sold though their website without the involvement of a record label.

"Mr Tembo" is the fourth single released by English recording artist, songwriter and Blur/Gorillaz frontman, Damon Albarn, from his debut solo studio album Everyday Robots. Its release as a single was limited to the United States. The track features The Leytonstone City Mission Choir and contains a sample of "Lions", from the 1959 album Way Out Humor as written and performed by Richard Buckley. The track is produced by both Albarn and Richard Russell, whom Albarn had previously worked with on Bobby Womack's comeback album The Bravest Man in the Universe and on the DRC Music album, Kinshasa One Two.
Hello I Feel the Same is the tenth studio album by American alternative band The Innocence Mission. It was released on October 16, 2015, via Korda Records, a cooperative record label founded by The Ocean Blue, a band with whom the Innocence Mission formed a "long and deep friendship that goes back to some of each band's first shows in Pennsylvania and their major label debut records on Sire and A&M". An edition on translucent green vinyl was released from early January 2016. It is their first studio album since 2010's My Room in the Trees, making five years the longest gap between studio albums in their career.
Sun on the Square is the eleventh studio album by American alternative band The Innocence Mission, released in the United States via Badman Recording Co. and in Japan by P-Vine Records on June 29, 2018, with a European release following one week later on Bella Union. The record is available for streaming via Badman's official SoundCloud channel.

It was released on 13 May 2020 through Dirty Hit and Polydor Records as an exclusive the seventh and final single from their fourth studio album, Notes on a Conditional Form (2020). The song was written by band members Matty Healy, George Daniel, Adam Hann and Ross MacDonald. Production of the track was handled by Daniel and Healy alongside Jonathan Gilmore. "Guys" is a mid-tempo indie rock and pop rock ballad that celebrates the band's nearly two decades of friendship, described by Healy as an ode to platonic love and an answer song to "Girls" (2013).
Illusory Walls is the fourth studio album by American emo band the World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die, released October 8, 2021, by Epitaph Records. The name of the album, as well as the lead single "Invading the World of the Guilty as a Spirit of Vengeance", is inspired by the video game series Dark Souls. It is the band's first album since the departure of guitarist-vocalists Tyler Bussey and Dylan Balliett and the death of founding member Tom Diaz. The album was followed by a tour through the fall, including a concert at Brooklyn's Elsewhere Hall which was recorded for their live album Thank You for Being Here.
