Abby Dunford (born January 2, 2006) is a Canadian-American swimmer, currently swimming for Las Vegas-based swim team Sandpipers of Nevada. She swam in the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in the women's 1,500m preliminary heats, finishing 17th, not qualifying for the final. [1] She would also swim the open water 5km and 10km events, finishing 31st and 38th respectively. [2] [3] She is also scheduled to swim at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. [4]

Career

Early career

In December 2017, while Dunford was 11 years old and swimming for Tiger Aquatics, she would break the 11-12 girls Louisiana state record, which had stood for 41 years, for the 500m freestyle by more than a second with a time of 5:06.24. She would go on to say "I was really shocked. I really wanted the record. It was great. I was so happy." [5]

2021

In 2021, Dunford aimed to compete for Canada at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the women's 1,500m freestyle, but came up short of the Olympics qualifying time, finishing six seconds behind. [6] According to Dunford, COVID-19 protocols during the pandemic affected her training when she returned to Canada. [7]

2022: World Aquatics Championships

At the Canadian Swimming Trials 2022, the Canadian qualifying event for 2022 World Aquatics Championships, she would win the gold metal in the event, earning a time of 16:20.26, knocking her personal best time by 18 seconds. [8]

Gregorio Paltrinieri is an Italian competitive swimmer. He is the Olympic and world long course and short course champion and three-times European long course champion in the 1500 m freestyle event at the 2012, 2014 and 2016 European Aquatics Championships, and two-times European long course champion in the 800 m freestyle event. Paltrinieri is a former 1500 m freestyle world record holder. He also holds the long course European records in the 800 m and 1500 m freestyle events with times of 7:39.27 and 14:32.80.

Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky is an American competitive swimmer. She has won six Olympic individual gold medals and 14 world championship individual gold medals, the most in history for a female swimmer. Ledecky is the world record holder in the women's 800-, and 1500-meter freestyle as well as the former world record holder in the women's 400-meter freestyle. She also holds the fastest-ever times in the women's 500-, 1000-, and 1650-yard freestyle events.

Ashley Grace Twichell is an American competition swimmer who specializes in long-distance freestyle and open-water events. She placed seventh in the 10 kilometer open water swim at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Twichell's age at her Olympic Games debut, 32 years of age, made her the oldest American swimmer first-timer at an Olympic Games since 1908.

Eric Hedlin is a Canadian long-distance swimmer. Hedlin won a silver medal in the men's open water 5 km swim at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships.

Jordan Wilimovsky is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in open water swimming. At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia, Wilimovsky won the gold medal in the 10 km open water event. Wilimovsky won by a margin of 12.1 seconds over the second place finisher Ferry Weertman of the Netherlands. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, Wilimovsky competed in both pool swimming and open water swimming events, becoming the first American to swim in both types of events at one Olympic Games.

Taylor Madison Ruck is a Canadian competitive swimmer. She won two Olympic bronze medals as part of Canada's women's 4×100 metre and 4×200 metre freestyle relay teams at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Ruck won eight medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. Her eight medal performance of one gold, five silver, and two bronze tied her with three other athletes for the most all-time at a single Commonwealth Games, as well as making her the most decorated Canadian female athlete ever at a single Commonwealth Games. Ruck is the all-time leading medallist at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships having won nine gold, two silver, and two bronze over the course of the 2015 and 2017 editions.

Penny Oleksiak Canadian swimmer

Penelope Oleksiak is a Canadian competitive swimmer. Her country's most decorated Olympian, Oleksiak rose to fame during the 2016 Summer Olympics, where she became the first Canadian to win four medals in the same Summer Games, and the country's youngest Olympic champion with her gold medal win in the 100 m freestyle. She was the first athlete born in the 2000s to claim an Olympic gold medal in an individual event. Her success led to her being awarded the 2016 Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's top athlete, the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award as Canada's top female athlete for 2016, and a member of the Canadian Press team of the year. Five years later she won three additional medals at the 2020 Summer Olympics, breaking the national record for Olympic medals.

Javier Carlos Acevedo is a Canadian competitive swimmer. He competes primarily in the backstroke events. Acevedo won two bronze medals at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships as part of both the mixed 4×100 m freestyle relay and the 4×100 m mixed medley relay. He has also won a gold medal at the 2015 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in the 4×100 m mixed freestyle relay and a silver in the 50 m backstroke. Acevado was a former Junior world record holder in the 100 m backstroke event.

Florian Wellbrock is a German swimmer. He is the world record holder in the short course 1500 metre freestyle. He won gold medals in the 10 kilometre open water swim and 1500 metre freestyle at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships. At the 2020 Summer Olympics he won the gold medal in the 10 kilometre open water swim and the bronze medal in the 1500 metre freestyle. She also won the World (LC) title in 2019. Kieran Smith is an American swimmer specializing in freestyle and individual medley events. He is the American record and US Open record holder in the 500 yard freestyle. He won a gold medal in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships, Smith won a gold medal and set an American record as part of the 4×200 metre freestyle relay. He competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics, winning the bronze Olympic medal in the 400 meter freestyle, placing sixth in the 200 meter freestyle and fourth in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay. At the 2017 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships, he won the silver medal in the 200 meter individual medley. He competes collegiately for the Florida Gators.

Erica Sullivan is an American swimmer. She received a silver medal in the 1500-meter freestyle at the 2020 Summer Olympics after placing second and qualifying in the event at the 2020 US Olympic Swimming Trials.

Natalie Hinds is an American professional swimmer specializing in freestyle and butterfly events. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, she won a bronze medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay, swimming in both the prelims and the final. She won a bronze medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships, swimming the anchor leg of the relay in the prelims, and a gold medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay, swimming the butterfly leg of the relay in the preliminaries. At the 2022 US National Championships, she won the national title in the 100 meter freestyle.

Joshua Liendo Edwards is a Canadian competitive swimmer who specializes in the freestyle and butterfly. He is the first Black Canadian swimmer to win an individual medal at a major international championship, as well as the first to win a gold medal, and represented Canada at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Katie Grimes is an American competitive swimmer. At the 2022 World Aquatics Championships, she won silver medals in the 1500 meter freestyle and the 400 meter individual medley. She placed fourth in the 800 meter freestyle at the 2020 Summer Olympics, where she was the youngest member of the US Olympic Team at 15 years of age.

Summer McIntosh is a Canadian competitive swimmer. McIntosh first drew recognition when, at age 14, she was the youngest member of the Canadian team for the 2020 Summer Olympics, where she achieved a notable fourth-place finish. The following year she became the youngest world champion in swimming in over a decade, and the first Canadian to win two gold medals at a single World Championships, for which she was dubbed a "teen swimming sensation."

Claire Weinstein is an American swimmer, currently swimming for Las Vegas-based swim team Sandpipers of Nevada. She is currently scheduled to swim in the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in the women's 200m freestyle, becoming the youngest United States swimmer to swim in the World Aquatic Championships since 2007.
