Abdul Majeed Kakroo is a retired Indian footballer from Kashmir who played as a striker and he represented India at the 1984 Asian Cup. He became the first player from Kashmir to captain India when he captained the team during the 1987 Nehru Cup. [1] [2] He played for both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal during his club career. [1] One of the stands at the TRC Turf Ground has been named after him by Real Kashmir FC. [3]

Club career

He signed his first professional contract in 1977 with Road Transport Cooperation (RTC). [4] He was paid a salary of Rs.180 per month. [4] He helped RTC reach the quarterfinals of the Durand Cup where they lost to JCT. [4] He also represented Jammu and Kashmir in the Santosh Trophy tournament. He later went on to play for East Bengal and Mohun Bagan and became one of the highest paid footballers in the country. [4] Kakroo had to cut short his football career in Kolkata after he received threats from militants to return home.

International career

After impressing in the Durand Cup in 1979-80, he was called up to the National Team camp. He wasn't selected for the final team and was told to improve his game with the left foot. [4] He later went on to play for the national team for 8 years. He was a part of the Indian squad that played in the 1984 Asian Cup. Later, he captained the national team in the 1987 Nehru Cup. He scored goals against China and Malaysia in the 1983 President's Cup. [5] He played a total of 30 matches with the National team.

Popular sports in Jammu and Kashmir include cricket, football and winter sports along with sports like golf, water sports, Ice stock sport and adventure sports. The National Winter Games have been held in Gulmarg in 1996, 2004 and 2009. The first Khelo India Winter Games were held in February and March 2020 in Leh and Gulmarg. Jammu and Kashmir won the most gold medals while the Indian Army team came second with 8 gold medals. The second edition of the winter games were also held successfully in Gulmarg in 2020 with Jammu and Kashmir coming first and Karnataka second.

The 2019–20 Mohun Bagan FC season was the club's 13th season in I-League and 130th season since its establishment in 1889. The team finished runners-up in the Calcutta Football League and Durand Cup. They were crowned Champions in the I-League and reached the semifinals of the Sheikh Kamal Cup where they were defeated by Terengganu.

The 2019 Durand Cup was the 129th edition of the Durand Cup, oldest football tournament in Asia, since the tournament's founding in 1888. 16 teams competed in the tournament. The matches were played across three locations in West Bengal, namely Kolkata, Howrah and Kalyani from 2 August 2019. The final took place at the Salt Lake Stadium on 24 August 2019.

In a domestic career spanning twelve years between 1977 and 1989, he had represented all three of Calcutta's football clubs, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, and Mohammedan Sporting. Bose won twenty-four trophies while representing the big three of Kolkata.
