The 1984 AFC Asian Cup was the 8th edition of the men's AFC Asian Cup, a quadrennial international football tournament organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The finals were hosted by Singapore between 1 December and 16 December 1984. The field of ten teams was split into two groups of five. Saudi Arabia won their first title, beating China in the final 2–0. [1] [2] [3]

Qualification

21 teams competed in qualifying for the 1984 AFC Asian Cup with the teams being separated into three groups of five teams and one group of six. The top two of each group would qualify through to the Asian Cup as they would join Singapore and Kuwait who automatically qualified. At the end of the qualifying, the remaining eight teams was filled in which included Saudi Arabia as they made their finals debut.[ citation needed ]

Syria has been a major participant in the AFC Asian Cup with seven appearances in the tournament, in 1980, 1984, 1988, 1996, 2011, 2019, and 2023. At 2023 Asian Cup, Omar Khribin scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory over India, which granted Syria its first win in the competition since 2011, and first ever qualification to the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams.

Since the AFC Asian Cup was founded in 1956, Qatar has participated in 10 Asian Cups between 1980 and 2019. However, prior to the 2019 edition, Qatar only reached the quarter-finals twice: in 2000 as one of the two best third-place teams when the tournament had only 12 nations competing, and in 2011, when they finished second in Group A behind Uzbekistan.

Singapore national football team has participated in the AFC Asian Cup since its inception in 1956. Singapore did not advance through the qualifying rounds except in the 1984 AFC Asian Cup which they qualified by hosting the tournament.

Kuwait is one of the most successful teams in the AFC Asian Cup, having won the title once, during the 1980 edition which they were awarded as host, becoming the first Arab team to win the Asian Cup.

The 1984 AFC Asian Cup Final was a football match which determined the winner of the 1984 AFC Asian Cup, the 8th edition of the AFC Asian Cup, a quadrennial tournament contested by the men's national teams of the member associations of the Asian Football Confederation. The match was won by Saudi Arabia, defeating China 2–0.

The United Arab Emirates is one of the more successful teams in the Asian Cup qualifying for ten editions from 1980 to 2019. They have qualified for the semi-finals on four occasions, as well as the final in 1996, however they have never won an Asian Cup.
