Aeropsidae is a family of echinoderms belonging to the order Spatangoida. [1] It contains one extant genus. There are also eight extinct genera, most of which fall in the subfamily Corasterinae. [2]
Initially, a large number of genera were included on the basis of their apetaloid ambulacra. This, however, resulted in the inclusion of a number of unrelated genera some of which are holasteroid, and others that are spatangoid. [3] Later, Mortensen included just two genera - Aceste and Aeropsis . The two forms are very different in test architecture. Aceste is now considered to be an apetaloid derivative of Proraster and is nor believed to be closely related to Aeropsidae. [3]
The following genera are recognised: [2]
Subfamily Corasterinae Lambert & Thiéry, 1924
No subfamily
Myliobatiformes is one of the four orders of batoids, cartilaginous fishes related to sharks. They were formerly included in the order Rajiformes, but more recent phylogenetic studies have shown the myliobatiforms to be a monophyletic group, and its more derived members evolved their highly flattened shapes independently of the skates.
The Aspidodiadematidae are a family of sea urchins.
Urogymnus is a genus of stingrays in the family Dasyatidae from marine, brackish and freshwater habitats in the Indo-Pacific and tropical East Atlantic regions. The genus was previously considered to be monotypic, containing only the porcupine ray. Molecular phylogenetic research published in 2016 reassigned several species from Himantura to Urogymnus.
Carditidae is a family of marine bivalve clams of the order Carditida, which was long included in the Venerida. They are the type taxon of the superfamily Carditoidea.
Cerithiidae, common name the cerithiids or ceriths, is a large family of medium-sized marine gastropods in the clade Sorbeoconcha.
Ophiocomidae are a family of brittle stars of the suborder Ophiurina.
Enidae is a family of air-breathing land snails, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusks.
Cidaridae is a family of sea urchins in the order Cidaroida.
Tomopleura is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Borsoniidae.
Psychocidaridae is a family of sea urchins in the order Cidaroida. The genus Psychocidaris is extant while the other genera are only known from fossils. The family has been in existence since the Lower Jurassic (Toarcian) and the range includes Europe, Ukraine, North America, North Africa and the West Pacific.
Echinidae is a family of sea urchins in the order Camarodonta. Members of the family are found in the Atlantic Ocean and the Antarctic.
Eucidaris is a genus of cidaroid sea urchins known as slate pencil urchins. They are characterised by a moderately thick test, a usually monocyclic apical disc, perforate and non-crenulate tubercles and nearly straight ambulacra with horizontal pore pairs. The primary spines are few and widely spaced, stout with blunt flat tips and beaded ornamentation and the secondary spines are short and apressed. They originated in the Miocene and extant members of the genus are found in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean, East Pacific, Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.
Hemicidaridae is a family of extinct sea urchins characterized by large, massive, club-shaped spines.
Concavus is a genus of barnacles.
Hirsutodynomene is a genus of crabs in the family Dynomenidae. All species in this genus except the newest one belonged to the genus Dynomene. These two genera form the subfamilia Dynomeninae. The type species of this genus is: Dynomene spinosa(Rathbun, 1911).
Turridae is a taxonomic family name for a number of predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea.
The pourtalesiids (Pourtalesiidae) are a family of irregular sea urchins that live in the deep sea. They are secondarily bilateral-symmetrical and like other representatives of the taxon Holasteroida they lack the lantern of Aristotle, which is typical for many other sea urchins. The genus Pourtalesia was named after Louis-François de Pourtalès who first collected these animals while dredging at a depth of 600 m. The family is known already from the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) and is distributed worldwide.
Tetraphyllum is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Gesneriaceae. As of April 2021, there was no consensus as to whether the correct scientific name for the genus is Tetraphyllum or Tetraphylloides, some sources using the former and some the latter.
Schizasteridae is a family of echinoderms belonging to the order Spatangoida.
Paleopneustina is a suborder of sea urchins of the order Spatangoida. Its taxonomy is still under investigation.
