Agder District Court (Norwegian : Agder tingrett) is a district court located in Agder county, Norway. This court is based at three different courthouses which are located in Farsund, Kristiansand, and Arendal. The court serves most of Agder county and includes cases from 24 municipalities. The courthouse in Farsund accepts cases from the municipalities of Farsund, Flekkefjord, Hægebostad, Kvinesdal, and Lyngdal. The courthouse in Kristiansand accepts cases from the municipalities of Birkenes, Bygland, Bykle, Evje og Hornnes, Iveland, Kristiansand, Lillesand, Lindesnes, Valle, Vennesla, and Åseral. The courthouse in Arendal accepts cases from the municipalities of Arendal, Froland, Gjerstad, Grimstad, Risør, Tvedestrand, Vegårshei, and Åmli. The court is led by a chief judge (sorenskriver) and several other judges. The court is a court of first instance. Its judicial duties are mainly to settle criminal cases and to resolve civil litigation as well as bankruptcy. The administration and registration tasks of the court include death registration, issuing certain certificates, performing duties of a notary public, and officiating civil wedding ceremonies. Cases from this court are heard by a combination of professional judges and lay judges. [3]
This court was established on 26 April 2021 after the old Aust-Agder District Court, Kristiansand District Court, and Lister District Court were all merged into one court. The new district court system continues to use the courthouses from the predecessor courts. [4]
Kristiansand District Court was a district court in Agder county, Norway. The court was based in the town of Kristiansand. The court existed until 2021. It had jurisdiction over the southern part of the county which included the municipalities of Kristiansand, Bykle, Valle, Bygland, Evje og Hornnes, Iveland, Vennesla, Birkenes, Lillesand, Lindesnes, and Åseral. Cases from this court could be appealed to Agder Court of Appeal. This court employed a chief judge, 11 other judges, 4 assistant judges, and 23 prosecutors.
Lister District Court was a district court in Agder county, Norway. The court was based in the town of Farsund. The court existed from 2005 until 2021. It had jurisdiction over the southwestern part of the county which included the municipalities of Farsund, Hægebostad, Flekkefjord, Kvinesdal, and Lyngdal. Cases from this court could be appealed to Agder Court of Appeal. This court employed a chief judge, three other judges, and four prosecutors.
Aust-Agder District Court was a district court in Agder county, Norway. The court was based in the town of Arendal. The court existed from 2004 until 2021. It had jurisdiction over the eastern part of the county which included the municipalities of Grimstad, Arendal, Froland, Åmli, Tvedestrand, Vegarshei, Risør, and Gjerstad. Cases from this court could be appealed to Agder Court of Appeal.
Sogn og Fjordane District Court is a district court located in Vestland county, Norway. This court is based at two different courthouses which are located in Førde and Sogndalsfjøra. There is also a courthouse in Nordfjordeid, however, this courthouse is not staffed, but it can be used by the court if needed.
