Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is a turn-based strategy video game in a fantasy setting. Shadow Magic is the third incarnation of the Age of Wonders series, and is a stand-alone expansion to Age of Wonders II: The Wizard's Throne . All three games were developed by Triumph Studios. The series is the spiritual successor to Master of Magic , featuring strategic overworld and tactical combat layers.

Core game elements

The key element of the Wizard's Throne and Shadow Magic are the player's leader, the Wizards. In contrast to other iterations of the series, they do not gain experience and are weaker in direct combat than Heroes, who can be hired. As with preceding games, players can research spells from chosen elemental spheres of magic, cast at vastly longer range when residing in AOW2's defining Wizard Towers, returning less prominently in Age of Wonders 4. There are fifteen races in the game, of varying good and evil alignment.

The overworld contains basic Civilization-style cities, with unit and building production, along with gold and mana strategic resources and locales like dungeons. Game scenarios offer three different layers, the Surface, Underground and Shadow World, added in Shadow Magic, which returns in AOW 4: Eldritch Realms as the more hostile, dungeon-focused Umbral Abyss. The campaign focuses in part on it's titular antagonist, the Shadow Demons.

As with it's predecessors, Shadow Magic was designed for single-player and multiplayer, retaining a more active multiplayer community versus it's AOW2 baseline. While the graphical engine is the same as that of The Wizard's Throne, every race received new buildings and at least one new recruitable unit, three new races, and new maps. Much requested by fans, Shadow Magic introduced random map generation to the series.

After the end of the official support with patch 1.3, the game was unofficially developed by the fan-community via a community patch. [2] [3] The franchise was re-released on Stardock's Impulse digital distribution service in September 2010, [4] soon after via GOG.com and GamersGate, [5] and finally through Steam service.

Reception

The editors of Computer Gaming World presented Shadow Magic with their 2003 "Strategy Game of the Year" award. They wrote: "Of all the strategy games we played this year, Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is the only one with the 'just one more turn' addictiveness that distinguishes the best of the best". [11] It was a nominee for PC Gamer US 's 2003 "Best Turn-Based Strategy Game" award, although it lost to Combat Mission: Afrika Korps . [12]

The game was set on the island continent of Dereth and several surrounding smaller islands and archipelagos on the fictional planet of Auberean. The game was played in a large seamless 3D virtual world which could host thousands of players' characters at a time.

Neverwinter Nights is a role-playing video game developed by BioWare. Interplay Entertainment was originally set to publish the game, but financial difficulties led to it being taken over by Infogrames, who released the game under their Atari range of titles. It is the first installment in the Neverwinter Nights series and was released for Microsoft Windows on June 18, 2002. BioWare later released a Linux client in June 2003, requiring a purchased copy of the game to play. MacSoft released a Mac OS X port in August 2003.

In contrast to previous historical real-time strategy games, Rise of Nations is based on the entirety of history, taking place from the ancient era to the modern age, and features eighteen civilizations, playable across eight ages of world history. The game features several innovations on the real-time strategy genre, introducing novel features such as territory and attrition influenced by the turn-based strategy genre.

<i>Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne</i> 2003 video game expansion

Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne is the expansion pack for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, a real-time strategy video game by Blizzard Entertainment. It was released worldwide on July 1, 2003, for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. The Frozen Throne builds upon the story of Reign of Chaos and depicts the events after the main game's conclusion. The single-player unfolds from the perspective of two new protagonists—the Night Elf warden Maiev Shadowsong and the Blood Elf prince Kael'Thas—as well as returning protagonist Arthas Menethil. Additionally, the expansion contains Act I of a separate Horde campaign that is independent from the main storyline with Blizzard releasing Acts II and III via patch in December 2003, taking in player feedback of Act I when developing these chapters.

Dungeon Siege is an action role-playing game developed by Gas Powered Games and published by Microsoft in April 2002, for Microsoft Windows, and the following year by Destineer for Mac OS X. Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots is the official expansion pack to the real-time strategy video game Rise of Nations. It was released on March 31, 2014, through digital distribution, as well as through retail in select territories for Microsoft Windows. A port to Linux and OS X was released on April 14, 2015.
