Alapan Bandyopadhyay (born 17 May 1961) is an ex-Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and former Chief Secretary of State for the Government of West Bengal. He is the Chief Advisor for Chief Minister of West Bengal,Mamata Banerjee,since 1 June 2021. [2] [3] He took over from IAS officer Rajiv Sinha,in the year 2020,starting his tenure as Chief Secretary of West Bengal. [4]
Alapan was an officer of IAS batch-1987 from West Bengal. He was earlier a district magistrate of Howrah,North and South 24 Parganas districts. He had also served as Chief Executive Officer,Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority and Kolkata Municipal Commissioner. He has also headed several departments —transport,Micro,Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME),commerce and industry,information and culture,and home —as principal secretary. The IAS officer also served as interim state election commissioner in 2015. [2] He has penned several books including Amlar Mon in 2016 and edited several other books from Prosongo Gorkhaland (1987) to Philosopher's Stone:Speeches and Writings of Sir Daniel Hamilton (2000). He retired from IAS on 31 May 2021 and was appointed as Chief Advisor of Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1 June 2021 for 3 years. A student of Ramakrishna Mission Narendrapur (3rd rank holder in Secondary Examination,1976,and a National Talent Search Scholar,1978) and a student of Presidency College and Calcutta University (gold medalist in M.A. Political Science in 1983) he was a journalist with Anandabazar Patrika (ABP Group) before joining the IAS.
Bandyopadhyay was born in 1961 in Asansol,West Bengal.[ citation needed ] He is married to the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta and academic Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee. [5] His son Milinda Banerjee is lecturer of Modern History in University of St. Andrews,Scotland. [6] His younger brother,Anjan Bandyopadhyay who was a well-known journalist working in several Bengali media news channels,died on 16 May 2021 due to COVID-19 and its complications. [7]
Mamata Banerjee is an Indian politician who is serving as the eighth and current chief minister of the Indian state of West Bengal since 20 May 2011,the first woman to hold the office. Having served multiple times as a Union Cabinet Minister,Mamata Banerjee became the Chief Minister of West Bengal for the first time in 2011. She founded the All India Trinamool Congress in 1998 after separating from the Indian National Congress,and became its second chairperson later in 2001. She often refers to herself as Didi.

Hare School is one of the oldest schools in Kolkata,India,teaching grades one to twelve under the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education. It is a state government-administered boys school and was established by the Scottish watch-maker,David Hare. The establishment date is not agreed upon,but the official year of establishment is 1818. Thus the school is declared as the oldest western type school in Asia. The school is situated opposite the Presidency University,and is also adjacent to the University of Calcutta and Hindu School. The combined campuses of the Hare School and Presidency College is one of the largest in Kolkata.
Mohammed Salim is an Indian politician,who is the incumbent State Secretary in West Bengal of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was inducted in the politburo of CPI(M) in the 21st party congress organised at Visakhapatnam in 2015. He was a Member of the 16th Lok Sabha,representing Raiganj constituency. Earlier,he was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha,representing the Calcutta North East constituency of West Bengal. 1993 Kolkata Firing was an incident of firing by Calcutta Police in 1993 on Indian National Congress workers. The State Youth Congress led by Mamata Banerjee had organised a protest march to Writers Building on 21 July 1993 against the then Communist government of the state,demanding photo voter identity cards be made mandatory to ensure fair elections. The Police fired on the protesters killing 13 people and injuring many others.
