The history of bilateral relations between Albania and Austria dates back to 1912, when Albania declared its independence on 28 November 1912. Albania has an embassy in Vienna. Austria has an embassy in Tirana. [1] As a European Union (EU) member, Austria supports Albania in its euro-integration path. [2] Both countries are members of the Council of Europe and Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
During World War II, some Albianians were imprisoned in a subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp in Melk in German-annexed Austria. [3]
Diplomatic relations between Albania and Austria have traditionally been close and are currently governed by a complex set of treaties (including those with the European Union (EU), of which Austria is a member). [4]
