Alexander Penelas (born December 18,1961) is an American attorney who is the former mayor of Miami-Dade County,Florida.
Penelas,an American of Cuban descent, [1] attended St. Thomas University and graduated in 1981 with a degree in political science. [2] [3] In 1985,he received his J.D. degree from the University of Miami School of Law, [1] where he graduated cum laude and was inducted into the university's Iron Arrow Honor Society. [4]
Penelas and his wife,Lilliam,have two adult sons,William and Christopher,and a younger daughter,Alexandra. [1]
Alex Penelas served on the city council of Hialeah,Florida from 1987 to 1990. [1] [2] In 1990,he was elected to serve as a county commissioner in Dade County. [1]
Penelas ran in 1996 for Mayor of Dade County,renamed Miami-Dade County in 1997. [1] [2] Penelas advanced to the runoff for Mayor against fellow commissioner Arthur Teele. [5] Penelas scored 37% to Teele's 25% with former mayor of Miami Maurice Ferre and Xavier Suarez in third and fourth. [5] In the run-off Penelas soundly beat Teele with 60.56% to Teele's 39.44%. [1] Penelas ran for reelection in 2000 and beat Miami Dade Commissioner Miguel Diaz de la Portilla with 51.6% to Diaz de la Portilla's 20.9%. Because Penelas reached the 50% threshold,a runoff was not needed.
As mayor,he vocally opposed the repatriation of Elián González in 2000,but was not successful in stopping the repatriation. [1]
In 2004,Penelas was term-limited as mayor and ran for 2004 United States Senate election in Florida. This was the first open Senate seat since 1980,it was being vacated by longtime incumbent and Dade County native Bob Graham. [1] Penelas finished third in the primary,behind Betty Castor and Peter Deutsch. [1] His campaign was made more difficult when Al Gore called him "the single most treacherous and dishonest person I dealt with during the 2000 presidential election campaign anywhere in America." In April 2019, Penelas announced his campaign for re-election to the office of Miami-Dade County Mayor, a position he previously occupied for eight years. Penelas initially led in most polls but finished in third in the first round behind Daniella Levine Cava and Esteban Bovo. [7]

He was an unsuccessful candidate in the 2010 elections for the U.S. Senate seat for Florida vacated by Mel Martínez for the Democratic primary.

Joseph Xavier Carollo is a Cuban-American politician who served as mayor of Miami from 1996 to 1997 and again from 1998 to 2001. Arthur E. "Art" Teele Jr. was an American lawyer and politician from the Republican Party. In the early 1980s, he served as the head of the Urban Mass Transportation Administration from 1981 to 1983. Born into a wealthy black family in Florida, Teele received an excellent education and became an officer in the US Army, and later had a successful career in private practice and politics. The Miami Herald published claims of legal wrongdoing against Teele during his fight to have a conviction against him overturned, after which he killed himself. Posthumously, his case was appealed and his conviction was overturned, exonerating him of all charges.

A Republican, Díaz de la Portilla was a City of Miami Commissioner for District 1 and a member of the Florida Senate from 2000 to 2010, representing parts of Miami-Dade County. Carlos Antonio Giménez is a Cuban-born American retired firefighter and politician serving as the U.S. representative for Florida's 28th congressional district. Giménez, first elected in 2011, was term-limited; instead running for the U.S. House of Representatives to represent Florida's 26th congressional district.

Previously, she was a Miami-Dade County Commissioner from 2014 until her election as mayor in 2020. She handily won re-election in 2024. She is the first woman and the first person of Jewish descent to serve as mayor of Miami-Dade County.
The 1996 Metro-Dade County mayoral election took place on September 1, 1996. It was the first election in the Metro Dade County area since the election of Stephen P. Clark. The election pitted various well-known and popular figures in the Miami-Dade area. Maurice Ferre and Xavier Suarez and former rivals in the 1987 Miami Mayor race, Arthur Teele and young former Hialeah City Councilman Alex Penelas along with several other minor candidates. County Commissioners Arthur Teele and Alex Penelas went on to the run-off. Penelas's victory made him the first Cuban-American mayor in Dade County and as of 2020, the only Democrat Cuban-American. Penelas also has the distinction of being the youngest mayor elected in Miami Dade County history at the age of 34. Arthur Teele was the first African American man to run for Dade County mayor.
