Alexander S. MacMillan (October 31,1870 –August 7,1955) was a Nova Scotia politician and businessman,the 13th premier of Nova Scotia,from 1940 to 1945.
MacMillan was born in Upper South River in Antigonish County. He made his fortune in lumbering and construction before being made chairman of the Nova Scotia Highways Board in 1920 and serving briefly as minister of highways in 1925. He was a member of Nova Scotia's appointed upper house,the Legislative Council from 1925 until 1928 when he won a seat in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly as a Liberal. He again became minister of highways in 1933. In 1940,when Premier Angus L. Macdonald went to Ottawa to serve in the wartime cabinet of William Lyon Mackenzie King,MacMillan became premier in his place. He retired as premier and from politics in 1945 to allow Macdonald to resume his provincial career. MacMillan died in Halifax at the age of 83.
Sir Charles Tupper,1st Baronet,M.D. was a Canadian Father of Confederation who served as the sixth prime minister of Canada from May 1 to July 8,1896. As the premier of Nova Scotia from 1864 to 1867,he led Nova Scotia into Confederation. He briefly served as the Canadian prime minister,from seven days after parliament had been dissolved,until he resigned on July 8,1896,following his party's loss in the 1896 Canadian federal election. He is the only medical doctor to have ever held the office of prime minister of Canada and his 68-day tenure as prime minister is the shortest in Canadian history.

Angus Lewis Macdonald,popularly known as 'Angus L.',was a Canadian lawyer,law professor and politician from Nova Scotia. He served as the Liberal premier of Nova Scotia from 1933 to 1940,when he became the federal minister of defence for naval services. He oversaw the creation of an effective Canadian navy and Allied convoy service during World War II. After the war,he returned to Nova Scotia to become premier again. In the election of 1945,his Liberals returned to power while their main rivals,the Conservatives,failed to win a single seat. The Liberal rallying cry,"All's Well With Angus L.," was so effective that the Conservatives despaired of ever beating Macdonald. He died in office in 1954.

Black Nova Scotians are Black Canadians whose ancestors primarily date back to the Colonial United States as slaves or freemen,later arriving in Nova Scotia,Canada,during the 18th and early 19th centuries. As of the 2021 Census of Canada,28,220 Black people live in Nova Scotia,most in Halifax. Since the 1950s,numerous Black Nova Scotians have migrated to Toronto for its larger range of opportunities. The first recorded free African person in Nova Scotia,Mathieu da Costa,a Mikmaq interpreter,was recorded among the founders of Port Royal in 1604. West Africans escaped slavery by coming to Nova Scotia in early British and French Colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries. Many came as enslaved people,primarily from the French West Indies to Nova Scotia during the founding of Louisbourg. The second major migration of people to Nova Scotia happened following the American Revolution,when the British evacuated thousands of slaves who had fled to their lines during the war. They were given freedom by the Crown if they joined British lines,and some 3,000 African Americans were resettled in Nova Scotia after the war,where they were known as Black Loyalists. There was also the forced migration of the Jamaican Maroons in 1796,although the British supported the desire of a third of the Loyalists and nearly all of the Maroons to establish Freetown in Sierra Leone four years later,where they formed the Sierra Leone Creole ethnic identity.
