Ali Mufiz (born 21 July 1944) is an Indonesian academician and politician who served as the governor of Central Java between September 2007 and August 2008. Prior to becoming governor,he had served for four years as vice governor under Mardiyanto between 2003 and 2007.
Mufiz was born in Jepara on 21 July 1944. He worked as a journalist in his youth,becoming a journalist for the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) affiliated Duta Masyarakat daily newspaper in 1966. He worked there until 1969,when he moved to become a secretary for the editor of the Dinamika Baru weekly in Semarang. He later studied at Diponegoro University,graduating in 1971 and later becoming a lecturer at the university starting in 1975. He was appointed head of program for public administration in 1984,and held the position until 1993. He also obtained a masters in public administration from the University of Southern California in 1987. [1]
He later became deputy chairman of NU's provincial branch in Central Java. [2]
In 1997,Mufiz had run as a legislative candidate under the Golkar party. [3] Mufiz was selected as the running mate to PDI-P's Mardiyanto in Central Java's 2003 gubernatorial election against Mardijo,another PDI-P politician. Mardiyanto and Mufiz secured the support of the National Awakening Party (PKB),and won the election with 62 out of 99 councillor votes despite the split within PDI-P. [2] [4] In 2007,Mardiyanto was appointed by president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as Minister of Home Affairs,and was thus removed from gubernatorial post with Mufiz succeeding him. Mufiz was officially sworn in as governor on 28 September 2007 by Mardiyanto. [5]
In 2008,he attempted to run for governor,but failed to secure the political support of PDI-P or PKB,and thus he did not run in the election. [6] His tenure ended on 23 August 2008,and he was replaced by Bibit Waluyo. [7]
After the end of his gubernatorial tenure,Mufiz joined Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's reelection campaign for the 2009 Indonesian presidential election,and was appointed as head of Central Java team. [8] In the 2013 Central Java gubernatorial election,Waluyo's reelection campaign named Mufiz as an advisor to the campaign team,but Mufiz instead endorsed Ganjar Pranowo,stating that he had been named an advisor without consulting him. [9] He also became head of the advisory committee of Central Java's branch of the Indonesian Ulema Council. [10]
Mufiz is married to Zaimatum Azam, [11] and the couple had at least two children. Mufiz' second child died in 2007 due to an illness. [12]
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle is a centre to centre-left secular-nationalist political party in Indonesia. Since 2014,it has been the ruling and largest party in the House of Representatives (DPR),having won 110 seats in the latest election. Presidential elections were held in Indonesia on 8 July 2009. The elections returned a president and vice president for the 2009–2014 term. Incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono,elected with a 20% margin in the 2004 election,sought a second term against former President Megawati Sukarnoputri in a rematch of the 2004 election,as well as incumbent Vice President Jusuf Kalla. Securing a majority of the votes in a landslide victory in the first round,Yudhoyono was re-elected without the need to proceed to a second round. Lieutenant General (Ret.) Bibit Waluyo is an Indonesian politician and former high ranking military officer who served as the governor of Central Java from 2008 until 2013,when he was defeated by Ganjar Pranowo. Prior to entering politics,he was an officer in the Indonesian Army,rising to the rank of lieutenant general and going on to hold the command of Kodam Jaya.
Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar,also colloquially known as Cak Imin or Gus Imin,is an Indonesian politician,serving as a Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives since 2019,and the chairman of the National Awakening Party (PKB) since 2005. Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono,commonly referred to as AHY,is an Indonesian politician and former army major who is currently serving as the leader of the Democratic Party. Serving in the Army from 2000 until 2016,he is the executive director of the Yudhoyono Institute and founder of the Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono Foundation. He is the son of former Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono,more commonly known as SBY.
Ganjar Pranowo is an Indonesian politician who served as the governor of Central Java between 2013 and 2023. He is a member of the nationalist Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). He was a candidate for president in the 2024 Indonesian presidential elections,running alongside former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of Indonesia,Mahfud MD and coming in third place. Previously,he represented Central Java as a national legislator in the People's Representative Council (DPR) for two terms from 2004 until 2009 and 2009 until 2013. He has been described as a left-wing populist.
The 2018 Central Java gubernatorial election was held on 27 June 2018 to elect both the governor and vice governor of Central Java. The election,which took place alongside local elections across Indonesia,saw the re-election of the incumbent,Ganjar Pranowo,over former Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Sudirman Said.

The incumbent,Bibit Waluyo,ran for re-election as a member of the Democratic Party,despite being first elected as a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) in 2008. In the election,he faced Ganjar Pranowo of the PDI-P and Hadi Prabowo of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS),being defeated by the former.
Hadi Prabowo,better known by his initials HP is an Indonesian politician and government employee,who is serving as the current Chancellor of the Institute for Home Affairs since 2020. Previously,he served as Secretary General of the Ministry of Home Affairs. In the 2013 Central Java gubernatorial election,Hadi ran as a candidate for governor who was promoted by a coalition of parties including the PKS,Gerindra,PKB,PPP,Hanura,and PKNU,and was paired with Don Murdono,the regent of Sumedang. However he lost the election,coming in third,behind Ganjar Pranowo and the then incumbent governor Bibit Waluyo.
Solihin Gautama Purwanegara was an Indonesian military officer and politician who served as governor of West Java from 1970 to 1975. As a student,he joined the Indonesian Army during the national revolution. Following the recognition of Indonesian sovereignty in 1949,he served mostly within the Siliwangi Military Region before joining the Hasanuddin Military Region and later becoming its commander. He was appointed West Java's governor in 1970,but due to disagreements on policy with the central government he served only a single term. He remained active in politics after his governorship,serving as advisor to President Suharto until 1993. He also briefly joined PDI-P after Suharto's downfall,and was involved in the presidential campaigns of Joko Widodo in 2014 and 2019 along with Ganjar Pranowo in 2024.
Presidential elections were held in Indonesia on 14 February 2024 with defence minister and former general Prabowo Subianto contesting the elections against the former governor of Jakarta,Anies Baswedan and the former governor of Central Java,Ganjar Pranowo;incumbent president Joko Widodo was constitutionally barred from seeking a third term in office.
