Dr Alice Bunn OBE (FIMechE FRAeS CEng) is the chief executive of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and previously the international director of the UK Space Agency.

Early life and education

Bunn is from Beckenham. [1] She attended Shrewsbury High School, Shropshire. [2] She completed GCE Advanced Levels at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College in Maths, Physics and Chemistry [2] and studied metallurgy at the University of Leeds, graduating in 1995. [3] She spent a year in Tampere at the University of Finland. [2] She obtained her PhD in 1998 from the University of Cambridge, where she worked in Metallurgy under the supervision of Lindsay Greer. [4]

Career

After completing her PhD, Bunn joined the Science Museum, London as a researcher and developer of exhibitions. [5] She joined the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) as coordinator of Earth Observation Science in 2000. [5] She was made head of Earth Observation Future Missions in 2002. [5] She joined Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs as location programme manager.

Bunn joined the UK Space Agency in 2011. [6] She led the International Charter for Space and Major Disasters from 2011 to 2012. [7] The charter forces the international community to provide satellite imagery immediately after a disaster. [7] She brokered the international agreement that ensured countries share satellite imagery after the MH370 disappearance. [8] She explored how satellite imagery can be used to save lives. [9] She formed a collaboration with the Italian Space Agency to share COSMO-SkyMed data. [10] In 2014 Bunn was appointed director of policy of the UK Space Agency. [5] [11] She led the security, regulation, communications and international engagement. [12] In 2014 she was included in Marie Claire as one of their Top Women. [8] [13] She was elected to the Space Foundation board of directors in 2015. [14] She led the space aspects of the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security program. [7] She was appointed vice chair of the European Space Agency in 2017. [15] She signed a joint statement to increase cooperation with CNES in January 2018. [16] [17] The collaboration will continue in spite of Brexit. [11] [18] She oversaw the collaborative agreement between Surrey Satellite Technology, Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station and the European Space Agency for commercial lunar missions. [19] [20]

Lectures

Bunn has spoken at the World Economic Forum [21] and also delivered the Reinventing Space Conference keynote lecture in 2014. [22] She spoke at the National Space Symposium in 2018. [23] She spoke at the 2017 Global Space Congress [24] and TEDx London in 2018. [25]

Work in education

Bunn has been part of programs that encourage students to engage with space missions. [26] She also collaborated with the WISE Campaign to create a set of classroom resources based on the space sector to encourage primary school children to study physics. [27] [28] She developed a space badge for Girlguiding. [29] [30] Bunn has advised on civil space activities to the Minister for Universities, Science and Cities. [31]

Honours and awards

In 1998 she won The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society Light Metals Division Light Metals Award for her paper Modelling of the Effectiveness of Al-Ti-B Refiners in Commercial Purity Aluminium. [3] [32] She received The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society Smithells Memorial Prize. [3] [ when? ]

Bunn was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2022 Birthday Honours for services to the UK space sector and charity. [33]

The United Kingdom Space Agency (UKSA) is an executive agency of the Government of the United Kingdom, responsible for the United Kingdom's civil space programme. It was established on 1 April 2010 to replace the British National Space Centre (BNSC) and took over responsibility for government policy and key budgets for space exploration; it represents the United Kingdom in all negotiations on space matters. The Agency "[brings] together all UK civil space activities under one single management". It is based at the former BNSC headquarters in Swindon, Wiltshire.

Luna 27 is a planned lunar lander mission by the Roscosmos with collaboration by the European Space Agency (ESA) to send a lander to the South Pole–Aitken basin, an area on the far side of the Moon. Its objective will be to detect and characterise lunar polar volatiles. The mission is a continuation of the Luna-Glob programme.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lunar Gateway</span> Lunar orbital space station under development

The Lunar Gateway, or simply Gateway, is a space station which Artemis program participants plan to assemble in an orbit near the Moon. The Gateway is intended to serve as a communication hub, science laboratory, and habitation module for astronauts. It is a multinational collaborative project: participants include NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC). The Gateway is planned to be the first space station beyond low Earth orbit.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2022 in spaceflight</span> Spaceflight-related events during the year 2022

The year 2022 witnessed the number of launches of SpaceX's Falcon rocket family surpassing the CNSA's Long March rocket family, making the United States the country with the highest number of launches in 2022 instead of China. This year also featured the first successful launch of Long March 6A, Nuri, Angara 1.2, Vega-C, Kinetica-1, and Jielong-3. National space agencies' activities in this year is also marred by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, leading to tension between Roscosmos and Western space agencies, threats of ending collaboration on the International Space Station (ISS), and delays on space missions.

MoonLIGHT is a laser retroreflector developed as a collaboration primarily between the University of Maryland in the United States, and the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics - National Laboratories of Frascati (INFN-LNF) to complement and expand on the Lunar Laser Ranging experiment started with the Apollo Program in 1969. MoonLIGHT was planned to be launched in July 2020 as a secondary payload on the MX-1E lunar lander built by the private company Moon Express. However, as of February 2020, the launch of the MX-1E has been canceled. In 2018 INFN proposed to the European Space Agency (ESA) the MoonLIGHT Pointing Actuators (MPAc) project and was contracted by ESA to deliver it. MPAc is an INFN development for ESA, with auxiliary support by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) for prototyping work. In 2021, ESA agreed with NASA to launch MPAc with a Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) mission. Nova-C, the lander on which MPAc will be integrated, is designed by Intuitive Machines and the landing site is Reiner Gamma. The expected launch date of the Nova-C mission carrying the instrument, IM-3, is in 2025.

The Lunar Polar Exploration Mission (LUPEX) is a planned joint lunar mission by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The mission would send an uncrewed lunar lander and rover to explore the south pole region of the Moon no earlier than 2026. It is envisaged to explore the permanently shadowed regions on the Moon. JAXA is likely to provide the H3 launch vehicle and the rover, while ISRO would be providing the lander.

The Commercial Lunar Mission Support Services (CLMSS), also called Lunar Mission Support Services (LMSS) is a collaboration between Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) and the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop lunar telecommunications and navigation infrastructure to support lunar scientific and economic development.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">SpaceX CRS-23</span> 2021 American resupply spaceflight to the ISS

SpaceX CRS-23, also known as SpX-23, was a Commercial Resupply Service mission to the International Space Station, successfully launched on 29 August 2021 and docking the following day. The mission was contracted by NASA and was flown by SpaceX using the Cargo Dragon C208. This was the third flight for SpaceX under NASA's CRS Phase 2 contract awarded in January 2016. It was the second mission for this reusable capsule.

The Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA) is the national space agency of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It was founded on September 12, 2018, by Luxembourg's Economy Minister Étienne Schneider.
