Details

Every year during Chithirai festival, Lord Kallallhagar enters the Vaigai river in Madurai near Alwarpuram. [5] Madurai corporation installed steel gates at Alwarpuram near the riverfront to control the dumping and polluting the area. [6] Also, Kallallhagar on his return journey to Alagar Koil, again visits Alwarpuram before going to Mysore Maharaja mandap for the event of 'Pooppallakku' there which is celebrated in a grand manner. [7]

Recreational places such as Gandhi Museum and Rajaji Park in Madurai are situated at Alwarpuram. [8] [9]

Politics

Alwarpuram area falls under the Madurai South Assembly constituency. Also, this area belongs to Madurai Lok Sabha constituency. [10]

The Vaigai is a river in the Tamil Nadu state of southern India; it passes through the towns of Theni, Madurai and Ramanathapuram. It originates in Varusanadu Hills, the Periyar Plateau of the Western Ghats range, and flows northeast through the Kambam Valley, which lies between the Palani Hills to the north and the Varushanad Hills to the south. The Vattaparai Falls are located on this river. As it rounds the eastern corner of the Varushanad Hills, the river turns southeast, running through the region of Pandya Nadu. Madurai, the largest city in the Pandya Nadu region and its ancient capital, lies on the Vaigai. The river empties into the Palk Bay near Alagankulam, close to Pamban Bridge in Ramanathapuram District.

KallalagarTemple or Kallazhagar Temple, also known by its own toponym Thirumaliruncholai, is a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu in Alagar Koyil, a village in Madurai district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Alvar saints from the 6th–9th centuries CE. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshiped as Kallalagar, and his consort Lakshmi as Thirumagal. This temple is called as Thirumaliruncholai in Sangam literatures and Naalayira Divya Prabandham sung by Tamil Alvar saints.

Tallakulam or Thallaakulam is located in Madurai district, in the State of Tamil Nadu in India. There is a 'rest mandapam' called 'Ramanathapuram Sethupathi Mandapam' at Tallakulam. During Chithirai festival in the months of April - May, Lord Kallazhagar from Alagar temple visits so many mandapams in and around Madurai on his way to and fro Madurai. This year (2022) also, Lord Kallazhagar began his return journey to Alagarkoil from Ramanathapuram Sethupathi Mandapam at Tallakulam, mounted on 'Poo Pallakku' here at Tallakulam. Most Maduraiites go to have fun at the Tamukkam ground and explore the annual Government Chithirai Exhibition. As many as 90,361 people visited the 212th annual Government Chithirai Exhibition at Tamukkam ground.

Simmakkal is a neighbourhood in Madurai district in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Simmakkal as meant in the language of Tamil, 'Stone statue of Lion', has a statue at the heart of the neighbourhood. During the British period, out of the four giant walls on East Veli Street, West Street, North Veli Street and South Veli Street already existed, three of them except on West Veli Street were demolished by 'Marret', the then Collector of Madurai. The landmark at the entrance gate of North Veli Street was simply replaced by a 'Stone statue of Lion' found near Thirumalai Naicker Mahal. It is that area surrounding the statue is called as 'Simmakkal'.

Yanaikkal is a neighbourhood in Madurai district in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Yanaikkal as the name in Tamil language implies that it is a 'Stone Statue of Elephant'. The area was said to be 'Allankadi' in Tamil language (அல்லங்காடி), which was busy with selling products during night times, several hundred years ago.

Nelpettai is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India. Muslims live in large clusters in Nelpettai. Albert Victor Bridge which is more than 133 years old, that connects Nelpettai and Goripalayam, is constructed over river Vaigai. Nelpettai has a non-vegetarian market that sells fish, meat such as mutton, chicken, etc. On East Veli street, a famous non-vegetarian restaurant namely Amsavalli bhavan biryani restaurant that functions beyond decades, is located. A bridge 3.2 km long and 12 m wide, is planned to be constructed to reduce traffic congestion, in between Madurai Corporation Ecopark just opposite of Madurai Corporation building and Nelpettai Anna statue junction, at a project cost of about ₹175.80 crore.

Villapuram is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India. It is located at an altitude of about 155 m above the mean sea level with the geographical coordinates of 9°53′42.7″N78°07′14.9″E. It was earlier known as Vilvapuram due to the presence of large quantities of Bael trees some times ago and then later renamed as Villapuram. In Madurai, the mandapas built for the deities to come and stay during festivals are called mandagapadis. In this way, the Bhavakai Mandapam, which is about 400 years old, is located in Villapuram. During the ten days of Chitrait festival in Madurai, Meenakshi mman and Sundareswarar, who come to this mandapam on the fourth day, bless the devotees from here until the evening. The area where the mandapam is located is rich in produce of cantaloupe and the people here offer them to the Lord.

Bethaniapuram is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India. Bethaniapuram people celebrated Pongal celebrations of the year 2023 as 'Mamadurai People Unity Pongal Festival 2023'.
