Goripalayam is a locality situated in Madurai city of Madurai district [1] in the state of Tamil Nadu in the peninsular India.

It is located with the geographic coordinates of 19°55′58.8″N78°07′44.4″E / 19.933000°N 78.129000°E / 19.933000; 78.129000 in Madurai. There is an important junction of roads such as Albert Victor bridge road, Allhagar Kovil road, Panagal road and Kalpalam road, in Goripalayam. At the intersection of these roads, there is a memorable statue for Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar, late freedom fighter [2] and twentieth century political leader. Mattuthavani Bus Stand, Madurai which is 4 km from Goripalayam, serves the people who travel to and fro Madurai from various places of Tamil Nadu by road transport. There is a road flyover project parallel to the existing Albert Victor bridge to connect Tallakulam (Tamukkam junction) and Nelpettai via. Goripalayam. [3] This flyover with a length of about 2 km will be constructed with an estimated amount of ₹190.4 crore. [4]

Goripalayam is located at about 4 km from Madurai Junction railway station and at about 16 km from Madurai Airport which is at Avaniapuram.

There are two educational institutions in Goripalayam viz., Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women [5] and American College. [6]

There is a State Government medical facility, Government Rajaji Hospital, [7] in Goripalayam.

Religion

Located at about 2 km from Goripalayam, there is a historical Hindu temple viz., Meenakshi Temple. [8]

At the heart of Goripalayam is built a worshipping place for Muslims named Goripalayam Mosque. [9]

Politics

Goripalayam area falls under the Madurai North Assembly constituency. [10] Also, this area belongs to Madurai Lok Sabha constituency.

He was elected three times to the national Parliamentary Constituency. The birth anniversary of Muthuramalinga Thevar on October 30 is celebrated annually by the Thevar community in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu as Thevar Jayanthi.

Sivaganga District is one of the 38 districts in Tamil Nadu state, India. Simmakkal is a neighbourhood in Madurai district in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Simmakkal as meant in the language of Tamil, 'Stone statue of Lion', has a statue at the heart of the neighbourhood. During the British period, out of the four giant walls on East Veli Street, West Street, North Veli Street and South Veli Street already existed, three of them except on West Veli Street were demolished by 'Marret', the then Collector of Madurai. The landmark at the entrance gate of North Veli Street was simply replaced by a 'Stone statue of Lion' found near Thirumalai Naicker Mahal. It is that area surrounding the statue is called as 'Simmakkal'.

Nelpettai is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India. Muslims live in large clusters in Nelpettai. Albert Victor Bridge which is more than 133 years old, that connects Nelpettai and Goripalayam, is constructed over river Vaigai. Nelpettai has a non-vegetarian market that sells fish, meat such as mutton, chicken, etc. On East Veli street, a famous non-vegetarian restaurant namely Amsavalli bhavan biryani restaurant that functions beyond decades, is located. A bridge 3.2 km long and 12 m wide, is planned to be constructed to reduce traffic congestion, in between Madurai Corporation Ecopark just opposite of Madurai Corporation building and Nelpettai Anna statue junction, at a project cost of about ₹175.80 crore.

South Gate is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India, with the geographical coordinates of 9°54'39.2"N, 78°07'07.3"E and is located at about 161 m above the mean sea level.

Anuppanadi is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India, located with the geographical coordinates of 9°54′17.3″N78°08′24.4″E and at an altitude of about 152 m above the mean sea level. Madurai, Vandiyur, Anna Nagar, K. K. Nagar, East Gate, South Gate, Goripalayam, Sellur, Simmakkal, Yanaikkal and Nelpettai are some of the important neighbourhoods of Anuppanadi. In the year 1887, excavations carried out at Anuppanadi indicate that Jar burials and earthenware containers were found.

Villapuram is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India. It is located at an altitude of about 155 m above the mean sea level with the geographical coordinates of 9°53′42.7″N78°07′14.9″E. It was earlier known as Vilvapuram due to the presence of large quantities of Bael trees some times ago and then later renamed as Villapuram. In Madurai, the mandapas built for the deities to come and stay during festivals are called mandagapadis. In this way, the Bhavakai Mandapam, which is about 400 years old, is located in Villapuram. During the ten days of Chitrait festival in Madurai, Meenakshi mman and Sundareswarar, who come to this mandapam on the fourth day, bless the devotees from here until the evening. The area where the mandapam is located is rich in produce of cantaloupe and the people here offer them to the Lord.
