Located at an altitude of about 162 m above the mean sea level, the geographical coordinates of Thathaneri are 9°56'30.5"N, 78°06'25.6"E (i.e., 9.941800°N, 78.107100°E).

Road transport

So many Madurai City Corporation buses ply via. Thathaneri. Periyar Bus Terminus which is one of the key bus terminii in Madurai is located at about 3.5 km from Thathaneri. Thathaneri is also served by another bus stand viz., Arappalayam Bus Terminus which is just a km from it. One more Bus stand namely Anna Bus Terminus is situated at about 4.5 km from Thathaneri. From November 2022, new bus services are operated from MGR Bus Terminus to Fatima College via. Anna Bus Terminus, Sellur and Thathaneri. [2] MGR Bus Terminus is 8 km away from Thathaneri. A four road junction in Thathaneri serves better for the people entering and exiting Thathaneri. A road project is being executed at a cost of about ₹9.5 crore as a separate road near Sellur rail over bridge near Thathaneri that leads to the four road junction. [3]

Madurai Junction railway station which is always a busy railway station, serves Thathaneri that is located at about 3 km from it.

The nearest airport to Thathaneri is the one at Avaniapuram namely Madurai Airport which is situated at about 16 km from Thathaneri.

There is an ESI (Employees State Insurance) Hospital that serves Thathaneri and its neighbourhoods. [4]

Politics

Thathaneri comes under Madurai Central Assembly constituency, [8] with the winner of its legislative assembly elections held in the year 2021, as Palanivel Thiagarajan. It also comes under Madurai Lok Sabha constituency for which the parliamentary elections were held in the year 2019 with the winner as S. Venkatesan.

Simmakkal is a neighbourhood in Madurai district in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Simmakkal as meant in the language of Tamil, 'Stone statue of Lion', has a statue at the heart of the neighbourhood. During the British period, out of the four giant walls on East Veli Street, West Street, North Veli Street and South Veli Street already existed, three of them except on West Veli Street were demolished by 'Marret', the then Collector of Madurai. The landmark at the entrance gate of North Veli Street was simply replaced by a 'Stone statue of Lion' found near Thirumalai Naicker Mahal. Anuppanadi is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India, located with the geographical coordinates of 9°54′17.3″N78°08′24.4″E and at an altitude of about 152 m above the mean sea level. Madurai, Vandiyur, Anna Nagar, K. K. Nagar, East Gate, South Gate, Goripalayam, Sellur, Simmakkal, Yanaikkal and Nelpettai are some of the important neighbourhoods of Anuppanadi. In the year 1887, excavations carried out at Anuppanadi indicate that Jar burials and earthenware containers were found.

Kalavasal is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India. It is located at an altitude of about 162 m above the mean sea level with the geographical coordinates of 9°55′49.1″N78°05′43.8″E. Madurai, Arasaradi, S. S. Colony, Arappalayam, Koodal Nagar, Vilangudi, Thathaneri, Simmakkal, South Gate and Yanaikkal are some of the important neighbourhoods of Kalavasal. In order to decongest the traffic near Kalavasal junction, a flyover of 0.75 km long, at a project cost of about ₹54.07 crore is constructed in Kalavasal. It is the first of its kind. It is a four-lane flyover. The purpose of building a flyover here is not met with its usage as fewer commuters use this.

Villapuram is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India. It is located at an altitude of about 155 m above the mean sea level with the geographical coordinates of 9°53′42.7″N78°07′14.9″E. It was earlier known as Vilvapuram due to the presence of large quantities of Bael trees some times ago and then later renamed as Villapuram. In Madurai, the mandapas built for the deities to come and stay during festivals are called mandagapadis. In this way, the Bhavakai Mandapam, which is about 400 years old, is located in Villapuram. During the ten days of Chitrait festival in Madurai, Meenakshi mman and Sundareswarar, who come to this mandapam on the fourth day, bless the devotees from here until the evening. The area where the mandapam is located is rich in produce of cantaloupe and the people here offer them to the Lord.
