Tallakulam or Thallaakulam is located in Madurai district, in the State of Tamil Nadu in India. There is a 'rest mandapam' (mandagappadi in Tamil language) called 'Ramanathapuram Sethupathi Mandapam' at Tallakulam. During Chithirai festival in the months of April - May, Lord Kallazhagar from Alagar temple visits so many mandapams in and around Madurai on his way to and fro Madurai. This year (2022) also, Lord Kallazhagar began his return journey to Alagarkoil from Ramanathapuram Sethupathi Mandapam at Tallakulam, mounted on 'Poo Pallakku' [1] here at Tallakulam. [2] Most Maduraiites go to have fun at the Tamukkam ground and explore the annual Government Chithirai Exhibition. [3] [4] As many as 90,361 people visited the 212th annual Government Chithirai Exhibition at Tamukkam ground. [5]

A mega book fair is to be organized by the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India and the district administration between 23 September – 3 October 2022, at the Tamukkam Ground. [6]

Stalin has announced that Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai will be renovated at an outlay of ₹6 crore. [7]

Sri Prasanna Venkatachalapathy temple in Tallakulam is famous for its construction by King (Mannar) Thirumalai Naicker. During the reign of King (Mannar) Thirumalai Naicker, he was a devotee of Lord Vishnu (Shri Venkatachalapathy) in Tiruppathi. He used to have his breakfast after his morning Pooja. His morning Pooja was being done following the Pooja of Lord Venkatachalapathy in Tiruppathi. For that 'Bell mandaps' ('Manikatti Mandapangal' in Tamil) had been constructed by him at various places from Tiruppathi to Madurai. Once the Pooja at Tiruppathi started, the first bell in Tiruppathi was rung and thereafter the other bells following it. And on hearing the sound of the last bell in Madurai, King Thirumalai Naicker to finish his pooja and thereafter to have had his breakfast. On one day, there was no sign of ringing the bells. So he rushed to the spot of Bell mandap nearby his palace in Madurai. On his way, he felt an obstacle which was a statue of an 'anger mode' Anjaneya. He stopped for a while and found an immediate darshan (Prasanna) of Lord Venkatachalapathy there (now called Tallakulam). This made him very astonishing and pleased. So, he decided to build a temple for Lord Venkatachalapathy. So was the construction of it and named 'Sri Prasanna Venkatachalapathy temple'.

Also, this area belongs to Madurai Lok Sabha constituency. S. Venkatesan won the 2019 elections, as the member of its Lok Sabha constituency. 2 km away from Tallakulam, at the intersection of roads in Goripalayam, a standing posture statue of former political leader cum reformer 'Paumpon Muthuramalingam' is erected.

Tamukkam Ground is located in Tallakulam in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Historically this ground was developed by Viswanatha Nayak, first king of the Madurai Nayak Dynasty, and Ariyanatha Mudaliyar and used for hosting royal entertainments, sports events and for display of martial arts. Arulmigu Prasanna Venkatachalapathy temple, Tallakulam is a Vaishnavite temple, constructed by King (Mannar) Thirumalai Naicker, dating back to 600 years ago. This temple is under purview of the administration of Kallalagar temple of Azhagar koil, of Madurai district. Goddesses here in this temple are 'Poodevi' and 'Sridevi'. Utsavar is named Srinivasar. This temple's Theertha is 'well water'. Hanuman is found to be in a posture of 'anger mode' and opposite to that is situated Chakkaraththaazhvaar.

Simmakkal is a neighbourhood in Madurai district in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Simmakkal as meant in the language of Tamil, 'Stone statue of Lion', has a statue at the heart of the neighbourhood. During the British period, out of the four giant walls on East Veli Street, West Street, North Veli Street and South Veli Street already existed, three of them except on West Veli Street were demolished by 'Marret', the then Collector of Madurai. The landmark at the entrance gate of North Veli Street was simply replaced by a 'Stone statue of Lion' found near Thirumalai Naicker Mahal. Villapuram is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India. It is located at an altitude of about 155 m above the mean sea level with the geographical coordinates of 9°53′42.7″N78°07′14.9″E. It was earlier known as Vilvapuram due to the presence of large quantities of Bael trees some times ago and then later renamed as Villapuram. In Madurai, the mandapas built for the deities to come and stay during festivals are called mandagapadis. In this way, the Bhavakai Mandapam, which is about 400 years old, is located in Villapuram. During the ten days of Chitrait festival in Madurai, Meenakshi mman and Sundareswarar, who come to this mandapam on the fourth day, bless the devotees from here until the evening. The area where the mandapam is located is rich in produce of cantaloupe and the people here offer them to the Lord.
