Nuwe Amanya Mushega,commonly known as Amanya Mushega,is a Ugandan lawyer,politician,diplomat,and civil servant. He served as the secretary general of the East African Community (EAC) from 2001 until 2006.
He was born on 27 June 1946 in Bushenyi District in the Western Region of Uganda.
Mushega received his early education in Uganda. He attended Mbarara High School from 1963 until 1966,before transferring to Kings College Budo in 1967. He entered the University of Dar es Salaam in 1969 to study law. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws in 1972 and went on to obtain his Master of Laws from Queen's University in Kingston,Ontario,Canada in 1974. In the late 1970s,Mushega enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy program at the London School of Economics but abandoned that program when he joined the National Resistance Movement in 1981. [1]
Following his graduation from the University of Dar es Salaam,he returned to Uganda in 1972 and taught as an assistant lecturer in the faculty of law at Makerere University. After obtaining his master's degree in 1974,he became a lecturer in the faculty of law at the University of Zambia in Lusaka. He returned to Makerere University in 1979 as a lecturer and continued in that capacity until 1981.
In 1981,Mushega joined the National Resistance Army of Yoweri Museveni,where he served as the chief national political commissar and rose to the rank of colonel. Between 1986 and 2001,he served in various ministerial roles,in the ministries of defence,local government,education,and public service. During that time,he also served as the member of parliament representing Igara East in Bushenyi District.
In 2001,he was appointed by the EAC heads of state to serve a five-year term as secretary general of the EAC. [2]
Following his work in the EAC,Mushega returned to Uganda and,along with others,started Mushega &Associates Consultants,a private consulting firm. [3] Following the constitutional amendment that removed presidential term limits in Uganda in 2005,Mushega,who opposed the amendment,left the National Resistance Movement political party and joined the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). [4] He currently serves as the FDC regional vice president for western Uganda. [5]

Eriya Kategaya was a Ugandan lawyer and politician. At the time of his death he was Uganda's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs. He was also an ex officio Member of the Ugandan Parliament, on account of being a cabinet minister.

Juma Volter Mwapachu is a Tanzanian politician and former Secretary General of the East African Community. He replaced Amanya Mushega of Uganda who completed his five-year term on March 24, 2006.

Gregory Mugisha Muntuyera, commonly referred to as Mugisha Muntu, is a Ugandan politician and retired military officer. He is the current President of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), a political party he founded in March 2019. He previously served as the President of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), an opposition political party, from 2012 to 2017. In September 2018, General Muntu parted ways with the FDC citing ideological differences with the new FDC leadership of Hon.Patrick Oboi Amuriat. On 27 September 2018 he announced in a televised press conference that he and some other leaders had begun what he called The New Formation which later became the ANT.
Tarsis Bazana Kabwegyere is a Ugandan sociologist, academic and politician. He is the current{{when minister of general duties, Office of the Prime Minister in the Ugandan cabinet. He was appointed to that position on 23 May 2013. Before that, from 15 August 2012 until 23 May 2013, he was the minister of gender, labour and social affairs. At first, the parliamentary committee vetting cabinet appointments rejected his selection, but after discussions between President Yoweri Museveni and Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, he was finally approved on 7 September 2012. Earlier, he was the minister of disaster relief and planning in the Ugandan cabinet, from 1 June 2006 until 27 May 2011. In the cabinet reshuffle of 27 May 2011, he was dropped from the cabinet and was replaced by Stephen Mallinga. He was also the elected member of parliament representing Igara County West, Bushenyi District, from 1996 until 2011.
Kiddu Makubuya is a Ugandan lawyer, politician, and academic. He is the former minister for general duties in the office of the prime minister. He was appointed to that position on 27 May 2011, replacing Janat Mukwaya who retired from elective politics. Before that, from 2005 until 2011, he served as Uganda's Attorney general. He resigned from cabinet on 16 February 2012 amid allegations of misappropriation of government funds. He is also the former member of parliament, representing Katikamu County South, Luweero District.
Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile was a Ugandan economist and banker. He served as the governor of the Bank of Uganda, the central bank of Uganda from 2001 until his death on 23 January 2022.
Yashpal Tandon is a Ugandan policymaker, political activist, professor, author and public intellectual. He has lectured extensively in the areas of International Relations and Political economy. He was deeply involved in the struggle against the dictatorship of Idi Amin in 1970's Uganda and has spent time in exile. He was the director of the Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) from 2010 until February 2022, the Herbert Lehman Professor of Government at the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University and the Professor of Anthropology, Political Science and African Studies at Columbia University.
Richard Sezibera is a Rwandan medical doctor, diplomat and politician, who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 18 October 2018 until November 4, 2019. He replaced Louise Mushikiwabo. He was replaced by Vincent Biruta on November 4, 2019.
Mary Busingye Karooro Okurut, more commonly known as Mary Karooro Okurut, is a Ugandan educator, author and politician. She is the former Cabinet Minister in Charge of General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister, in the Ugandan Cabinet. She was appointed to that position on 6 June 2016. Prior to that, from 1 March 2015 until 6 June 2016, she served as Cabinet Minister for National Security. She was appointed to that position on 1 March 2015, replacing Wilson Muruli Mukasa, who was appointed Minister of Gender and Social Issues. Between 2012 and 2015, she served as the Minister of Gender and Social Issues in the Cabinet of Uganda. She was appointed to that position in 2012. She replaced Syda Bumba, who resigned from Cabinet. Mary Karoro Okurut also serves as the elected Member of Parliament for Bushenyi District Women's Constituency. In the 2020 National resistance movement NRM party flag bearer elections, Karooro lost to Annet Katusiime Mugisha who was elected Bushenyi district woman member of parliament in the 2021 Uganda presidential and parliamentary elections.
Margaret Nantongo Zziwa is a Ugandan politician and legislator. She served as the Speaker of the 3rd East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in Arusha, Tanzania. She was elected to serve in that capacity in June 2012. She was impeached and voted out of office on 17 December 2014, on the basis of misconduct and abuse of office, but was later awarded compensation for illegal removal.
John Ddumba Ssentamu is a Ugandan economist, academic and banker. Currently, he is a Professor of Economics and former Vice-Chancellor (2012-2017) at Makerere University, Uganda's oldest university, founded in 1922. He also serves as chairman of the board of Centenary Bank, the second-largest indigenous commercial bank in the country.
Jacqueline Susan Ruhindi Mbabazi is a Ugandan educator, politician and businesswoman. She is the wife of the former prime minister of Uganda, Amama Mbabazi. She also serves as the Chairperson of the Women's League in the National Resistance Movement (NRM), the ruling political party in Uganda.
Herman Cornel Lupogo was a Tanzanian military officer and government administrator. After graduating from Makerere University, he enlisted in the Tanzania People's Defence Force in 1965. He held various positions in the army, including head of the National Leadership Academy, and served as a brigadier during the Uganda–Tanzania War of 1978 and 1979. He retired with the rank of major general in 1992, and subsequently worked as a government administrator. He chaired the Tanzania Commission for AIDS from 2001 until 2007, and died in 2014.
Doreen Nyanjura is a Ugandan politician, who was on 18 June 2020, appointed Deputy Lord Mayor for Kampala, replacing Sarah Kanyike. She also serves as the elected Local Council 5 (LCV) Woman Councillor, representing Makerere University at Kampala Capital City Authority, the governing body of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda. She was elected to her present position in 2016.
Augustino Steven Lawrence Ramadhani was a Tanzanian jurist and Christian leader. He was Chief Justice of Tanzania from 2007 to 2010, and a Judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights from 2010 to 2016. From 2017 to 2018 he was episcopal vicar of the Diocese of Dar es Salaam.
