Amara Karunakaran [2] (born 1 January 1984) is an English actress. [3] She made her film debut in 2007 as Rita in Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited , which premiered Venice Film Festival, and Peaches in St Trinian's . [4]
She made her stage debut in 2008 as Jessica in an RSC production of The Merchant of Venice and as Bianca in an RSC production of The Taming of the Shrew . With the latter, she made her West End debut at the Novello Theatre. In 2016, she co-starred on the HBO crime drama mini-series, The Night Of . In 2012, she co-starred in the film A Fantastic Fear of Everything .
Karan was born to Sri Lankan Tamil parents who had emigrated from Zambia to Britain two years before she was born. She was brought up in Wimbledon and attended Wimbledon High School. [5]
Karan went on to study at St Catherine's College, Oxford [6] and while there began acting in amateur plays including Sunday Morning at the Centre of the World at the Burton Taylor Theatre for which she received rave reviews [7] and was also singled out for her performance in When We Are Married at the Old Fire Station theatre. [8] During her time at Oxford, Karan wrote, directed, produced, and acted in a short film, By Myself, which came in second place in the 2002 Shoestring Shorts Competition. [9]
She began her career as an investment banker (at Hawkpoint and CIBC World Markets) specialising in mergers and acquisitions,[ citation needed ] before studying for an MA degree in acting[ citation needed ] at The Arts Educational Schools London. [10]
She carried the 2008 Olympic Torch during its time in London. [11]
Since 2016 she has been in a relationship with the actor Jamie de Courcey. [12]

On stage, she has appeared in Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) productions from 1982, playing Ariel in The Tempest, to 2018 when she was Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra. The first black woman in an RSC play when she featured in 1982, Simon has been at the forefront of colour-blind casting, playing roles traditionally taken by white actors, including Maggie, a character that is thought to be based on Marilyn Monroe, in Arthur Miller's After the Fall at the National Theatre in 1990.

The Darjeeling Limited is a 2007 American comedy-drama film directed by Wes Anderson, which he co-produced with Scott Rudin, Roman Coppola, and Lydia Dean Pilcher, and co-wrote with Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman. The film stars Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and Schwartzman as three estranged brothers who agree to meet in India a year after their father's funeral for a "spiritual journey" aboard a luxury train. The cast also includes Waris Ahluwalia, Amara Karan, Barbet Schroeder, and Anjelica Huston, with Natalie Portman, Camilla Rutherford, Irrfan Khan, and Bill Murray in cameo roles.

Hotel Chevalier is a 2007 short film written and directed by Wes Anderson. Starring Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman as former lovers who reunite in a Paris hotel room, the 13-minute film acts as a prologue to Anderson's 2007 feature The Darjeeling Limited. It was shot on location in a Parisian hotel by a small crew and self-financed by Anderson, who initially intended it to be a stand-alone work. Its first showing was at the Venice Film Festival première of the feature film on September 2, 2007, and it made its own debut later that month at Apple Stores in four U.S. cities.

Jadoo is a food-feud family comedy feature film set in Leicester, released in cinemas on 6 September 2013. It is written and directed by filmmaker Amit Gupta. It tells the story of two brothers, Raja and Jagi, who are both chefs, but fall out catastrophically. They set up rival restaurants, on opposite sides of Belgrave Road in Leicester; one cooking starters and the other main courses, and refuse to talk to one another. Raja's daughter Shalini, attempts to get the brothers talking again. She hatches a plan and asks them to work together to cook her a perfect Indian wedding banquet.
